I have used both, The p.4 is a better bios than the p.5 both will work though. So you will need either a retail x99 Haswell chip or know some one that can lend you one
So i have managed to get the motherboard updated to p.4 bios and also test it on p.5. Did not manage to boot on either of them :-(

The CPU is probably damaged? I will return it to the ebay seller i got it from and planning to buy another one. Could you please tell me what ebay lot will work on x99a raider? Preferably 2683 v4, however any equal or not much more expensive cpu will fit.

Thanks

That's an early engineering sample. If Intel was to sell that chip as a 3Ghz part the TDP would increase substantially. Take for example the E5-2670 and E5-2680. Increasing the clock speed by 100mhz meant a 15W TDP increase approximately. Besides usually the E5-W parts such as the E5-2687W have the highest clock speed as they are meant for workstations (hence W) instead of servers due to their TDP and cooling required.
Intel Xeon E5 v4 Broadwell Buyers Guide (Parallel Performance)
Well the retail version has 3,2ghz allcore.. if the CPU boosts really that high during all core loads, isn't the TDP already being exceeded?
And btw compare the GFLOPS on the 2687W V4 (12 core) and 2690 V4 (14 core), the GFLOPS scale well. In the end, both of the CPU's have the same all core turbo, but the TDP is different? Shouldn't the 2690 V4 have higher TDP, because of the all core turbo being at the same clockspeeds as the 2687W V4 and having 2 more cores. Intel advertises 2690 V4's TDP being 135W and 2687W V4's 160W. I can't really believe that 2690 V4 has a lower TDP despite haveing 2 more cores and the same all core turbo freq.

It should have worked, Its possible that the flashing process was a dud. I could sell you mines I have 2
E5 2683 v4 they both work they came off of a HP dual socket motherboard. How ever you will still be in the same situation if the motherboard bios wasn't flashed properly. You have to without a shadow of a doubt, have seen the motherboard boot up after a bios flash otherwise your taking a shot in the dark.

price. Just like the reason you use ES instead of retail.

I have been running ESXi without ECC for years and never noticed any issue because of it. As far as I can tell, at least with E5 2600 v3 single socket non-ECC UDIMM works, it just not advertised by Intel.
Hi do you have any idea if the E5 v4 xeon will work with ECC UDIMM as well ?

I have offer about 2x E5-2683V3 cpus for 700Euros. Seller told me, that cpus are final version, no es sample,
but when I got cinebench R15 screenshots form both cpus, result is 1656 and 1681 points, result looks like ES sample...
But name from Cinebench R15 is Intel Xeon CPU E5-2683V3, so it looks like original cpus...
Original E5-2683V3 should have 1850 points.

Do you have experience with LRDIMMS?
I got Crucial 128GB Kit (4x32GB) 2133MHz DDR4 CL15 DR x4 ECC Registered LRDIMM....
I plan to buy ASUS Z10PE-D16 WS. Or Supermicro?

Please don't forget you need 4 RAM modules for each CPU to get 100% performance.
2 RAM modules per CPU will work too, but performance will be 50% only.

Got the 2690 V4 @ 2,4ghz for 515€. Works like a charm, all core boost is 3,0ghz. Could somebody explain that why didn't Intel sell this chip as a 3ghz/(3,2ghz all core turbo on retail 2690 V4)? I mean if it has a higher all core turbo than the stock frequency, why sell it as a underclocked version? I know, that if you have crap cooling and hitting the temp limits, you may run the CPU only at stock frequencies..

Also, I disabled HT because GTA V doesn't seem to support high core count CPU's with hyperthreading..
Error "ERR_SYS_THREAD" :: Grand Theft Auto V Yleiset keskustelut

L0 stepping, is this bad?
HAHA that ERR_SYS_THREAD post is by me :)

If you read more into that I did post a fix, it has nothing to do with hyper-threading. GTA V is not NUMA aware so it will crash.

Two posts down I posted.

Succes !

Well I have some good news.
My system has 2x E5-2698 v3 processors, 32 cores / 64 threads.

No matter what I did I would receive that ERR_SYS_THREAD.
Even if I disabled 1 CPU.

Here is my fixed that worked for me.

I fire up the game with the Steam Launcher.
It will error out with ERR_SYS_THREAD

I then bring up the task manager and select GTA V Launcher.
Right click and drop down to Affinity.
I deselect all cores.
Now I enable CPU 0 (Node0) through CPU 0 (Node 8)
I cannot use any more than that as I will get that error.

The I hit retry on the GTA V Launcher and the game will work.

It seems GTA V is not NUMA aware and limited by the number of threads it can use.
Users with different CPUs might have to set Affinity slightly different than what I did,
I somehow do not think they will ever do a patch for this because I am such a rare user, but who knows.

An ES 2683 V3 will score around 1500 in Cinebench 15 (the ones floating on Ebay for around 220ish).

A QS and Retail version 2683 depending on how optimized your system will score around 1700-1730 stock. Overclocked 4.5% will yield you between 1790-1830. So 1680 might be lower than normal but much higher than the 1500 ES hit.

It really depends how well optimized your system is and how it handles turbo multipliers. I would say 1680 is within margin.

Just run HWInfo64, it will tell you if it is ES, QS, or retail (or OEM). To put your mind at ease.

Thx for answer, I still wait for screenshots from HWInfo64...
Is big problem for dual cpu, that I have only 4x32GB 2133 ECC Reg LRDiMMS memory modules?
It will be primary modeling and rendering station....
As I read threre, there is no too much difference between quad channel vs dual channel for rendering..
32-thread build on budget - Talcik&Demovicova

So if I count well, when oficiall E5-2683V3 should have 1850 points as single, and 3150 points as dual,
so these E5-2863V3 with 1651 and 1681 points as single, should have about 2600 as dual?

Guys, do I need 8 memory sticks for dual CPU setup to utilize possible bandwidth?
Where's everyone source memory? Looking for 64-128 Gig total (8x8 or 8x16)

Ebay usually. I usually try to pay around $1-$1.20 per GB for 8GB DDR3 1333MHz. More for 1600MHz and 16GB DIMMs

I wish DDR4 was that cheap. :) I'm looking at ebay, will have to bite the bullet and grab it.
Do I need 8 sticks to maximize performance? 4 sticks per CPU, x2 for Dual CPU rig.

Ooh yes DDR4 will be more expensive.

Yes 8 sticks would be needed to maximize bandwidth. That said, depending on what you are doing 2 per CPU may be fine. If cost was an issue I personally would get 4x16gb sticks and have the ability to add more later than 8x8gb sticks and have to replace all of them if you want to upgrade.

(Assuming you only have 8 slots)

Hello guys. This thread is a life saver, I've spent a month online trying to get some quality info or various ES versions and nothing else came close to what I've learned here.

But I am still stuck at a hard decision, which CPU to go with. Planning to build a dual CPU rig that would be used mostly for video editing (HD now, 4K in the soon future) and ofc for some late night gaming :D - and I also plan to make it a dual hackintosh boot, so I can also use Final Cut (not sure about the number of cores I could utilise there).
Future proofing is a factor, but I plan to use it for about 5-7 years, so I'll probably end up with buying a new MBO anyway unless I upgrade with smth like used 2686's. With that in mind I'm still considering the option of a pair of used retail E5-2670 for smth like 100$ on ebay for both with free shipping. Considering the testing and stressing a ES chip might have gone through, I figure my chances of the chip surviving the next 5 years are the same in both cases, and with the price I can afford to get a spare one in case of a failure and invest the $$$ difference into the GPU or even better in booze considering the coming hollidays :D

Anyway, if down that path I venture not, considering the next three options:

E5 2630L V4 QK3K - a pair for about 330$
E5 2630 V4 QK3G - a pair for about 440$
E5 2683 V3 QFGH - a pair for about 590$

I know the four options are not very comparable, but considering the workload and life expectancy of the rig, which would you reccomend? I don't want to brutally overkill it, but some extra leg room would be nice not knowing how much horsepower some future 4K projects might require.
Also some MBO advice, I'm kinda leaning towards ASUS mostly because of the OSX compatibility, not sure how the Supermicro's would perform in that enviroment.

Thanx a lot in advance :)

Be sure it has the latest BIOS, which supports BW-E.
Asus and Gigabyte MB's have problems posting really early sample ES chips, take that in mind. For example, my Gigabyte X99 UD3 w/ latest BIOS doesn't want to post anything on my 2690 V4 (QHVE5) but my 2630 V4 (SR2R7, but is a later ES chip)
You can take a gamble, or just ask the seller for accurate info (sellers usually don't answer the questions, idk why)

Some good options with optimized frequency:
14-core: E5-2690 V4 ES @ 2,4ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (550 dollars)
8-core: E5-2667 V4 ES @ 2,9ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (350 dollars)
12-core: E5-2687W V4 ES @ 2,9ghz (3,0ghz all core boost) (around 680 dollars, out of stock)

Hope this helps!

Hi all.
As others, i found this forum and thread while searching for ES CPUs compatibility.
So i am in progress building my rig, i got Asus Z10PE-D8 (1.04 HW, 3304 BIOS) and 2x 2667 V4 QHVD (ES2), 2x 360 USD Ebay (still there for 350USD).

First thing to note is that one CPU had a scratch almost 10 pads long on the bottom, one pad being almost completely cut off.
I used that as secondary CPU and that also forced me to buy 8 RAM sticks and try PCIE graphics card in all 3 CPU2 slots.
I found no issues (and also not found 2011-v3 detailed pinout to check what these damaged pins are) and the system seems to be totally stable (using W10 image of my old 4770K system for testing).
Seller insisted the CPUs work fine and were tested, but admitted they do not test on motherboards fully loaded with RAM or PCIE slots.
I am trying to ask the seller if he wants neutral feedback or is willing to provide small discount... :)

By mistake, i bought Kingston non-Registered ECC RAMs, which ended in error code B1, had to return them.
Had to order 8x Samsung 2400MHz 8GB Reg ECC sticks from Germany, because i did not found any Reg ECC in stock locally.

Next thing is that if i go over 100MHz on the bus (even 100.1MHz), the USB3 controller stops working - controller is visible in system, but if you plug a flash in, it is not loaded/visible. However i was able to go up to 102MHz stable if ignoring that issue. 103MHz (OC level 1) was not stable, freezed in Windows after few minutes of load.

For cooling i am using 2x Noctua NH-U12S and High speed fan profile, which means 800RPM on the fans.
In full load with Prime or Aida, cores are around 50C and the fan control is not raising RPMs until the CPUs go somewhere around 60C (tested by stopping the fans). The board is in open Thermaltake Core P5 case.
Speedfan is not woking on the board. :( And there are just 3 non-adjustable basic profiles in BIOS.

Power draw is almost 300W in load (measured on the power socket with wattmeter) and around 110W idle, but i have old 7800 GTX in it and with onboard VGA, it was about 20-25W lower. PSU EVGA P2 750W, fan is not spinning, ever.

The cores (all loaded) seems to run at 2.6GHz when there is AVX code and at 3.0GHz when there is not.
Xeon Turbo Charger feature does not seem to do anything, the performance and clocks seems to be the same.
Not sure what that should do anyway.
Interesting thing is, when i run AVX code and system decides to do also something else, some cores pop up to 3GHz briefly - i found right now on the forum this is V4 feature.
That also means if i run fun stuff like Seti on all cores, the system is still responsible, because it seems to boost up "out of AVX mode".
My old 4770K would be unusable in that situation.
Max one thread boost seems to be 3.2GHz as specified and idle is 1.2GHz.

Cinebench score is around 2435, 2480-90 or so when OC at 102MHz.

There is still work and spending money ahead - Titan XP (one) + water cooling, Samsung 960 EVO, wiring, hanging the case on a wall...
Photo when done or not right to do in this thread?
I will not be watercooling the CPUs, temps are good.

Finally, the purpose of the machine is to be able to run some VMs while gaming (so i got the highest clocked CPUs with "low" core count) and some number crunching probably.
I got it because i finally could, nice to have, experience.
Also some way, this is cost effective, because decent 1 socket 2011-v3 board would cost me 70-80% of the Asus Z10PE-D8 and still would not be as good equipped. I believe the layout and features are perfect for a workstation.
I was considering 6900K build, but the price is insane...

So, this should provide some info for folks who are considering it, this is a setup which is working exceptionally well so far.
It should last some time and maybe after few years, retail V4 will be affordable.

Regards from Czech Republic
