Hi Guys,

finally a forum where you can discuss ES Xeons without reading "those are illegal RABBLE RABBLE" every other comment. (we don't care)

I got my hands on a brand new Asus z10pe D8 ws for ≈ $200, and thought of getting some ES's to it, for a cheap but powerful server.
Asus z10pe D8 ws for $200?
Can you point me in the right direction?

Wow can't believe they require a PCB revision to support V4 Broadwell-E processors which appears to be serial number based.
that's just one of many reasons why i chose to go with a supermicro board instead...i knew about that ASUS board issue with v4 and didn't want to risk buying one and end up getting a pre-oct15 version

i received my 2686 v3 CPU..











vt-d works in esxi, i've passed through my gpu and a usb3 pcie card to a windows 10 VM.

if anyone can shed any light on this cpu (Stepping etc), that would be great

Looks good, same stepping as OEM/Retail. That is a very good processor for the price. Great Cinebench score as well, 200 more over my 2683V3 (mine has a slight over clock).

which MB are you using? (did you read my next post after the benchmarks?)

I did not see your last post earlier, I am not having any booting problems. Works 100% of the time, my board is an AsRock X99 Extreme 4. Currently have it 100% stable at BCLK of 104.1, giving me an all core turbo of 2.6 and 2 core turbo of 3.1. I can go up to 108 BCLK but I have to increase motherboard voltages (PCH, BCLK over voltage setting) quite a bit to boot and benchmark. Even then it was not 100% stable, sometimes would not boot at all and if it did windows would not recognize the BIOS settings. I only managed to successfully boot it 3 times into Windows at 108. Giving me 2.7 on all cores, and 3.2 turbo.

I've read the entire thread and I'm leaning towards either of these:
Intel Xeon E5 2650L V4 ES 1.5Ghz 30MB L3 12 Core MaxTurbo 2.3Ghz 65W Broadwell-E
INTEL XEON E5 2683 V3 ES QGN5 QFQK Remarked as SR1XH 35MB 2.0GHz Processor CPU
Intel Xeon E5 2690 V4 ES QH2M 2.1GHz 14Core 135W 35MB LGA2011-3 Processor CPU

The motherboard is going to be an ASRock X99 (possibly Extreme6/3.1) and the memory is 8x8GB Kingston 2800MHz.

Is there any better performance/price CPU than these? I'm open for any suggestions, the price is not a limiting factor, nor the performance (I'm quite fine with OCed Xeon X5650), however I'd like to get a proper CPU as cheap as possible.

I think there's a difference between 65W low-power 2650L and 14 core 2690. I mean that are two totally different CPU in terms of price and performance.
what kind of tasks you're buying it for?

I'm going to be use it in occasional video rendering but the performance gain is not crucial as I'm fine with X5650@4.0Ghz.
2690's performance is roughly 1.7x higher than 2650L but it is nearly 3 times more expensive. Single threaded performance is irrelevant to me. :)

If you say that 2690 is the best choice or there is something better in terms of P/P, I'd go with it.

Can I run the RAM at 2800MHz or I'm limited to 2133(V3)/2400(V4)?

I think the best one is 2658 or 2667 v3. Both will be slower then 2690 though.

I'm not 100% sure, but I guess you can only do 2133/2400. For the price of 2960, i7 might be a better choice, honestly.

The 2690 V4 you posted has a very crippling flaw, its maximum uncore speed is 1600mhz. A lot of benchmarks will show the weakness of a low uncore including video editing. I was interested in the CPU listed and email the seller if maybe it was just a flaw and they responded what HWInfo shows is correct. For instance my 2683 V3 has a higher Cinebench score than the sellers posted score by 100. A chip that has the same turbo speeds and a newer architecture should easily beat mine, but I attribute the low score due to the fact that the uncore speed is so low.

As far as ram speed you will be limited to 2133 on a V3 Xeon and I believe 2400 on a V4 Xeon (not 100% sure on the V4). With a little BCLK adjustments you can get it slightly higher.

I did not think that rendering was a problem with low uncore. Since it mostly are the cores that is taking the most load?

I see 43C max on several cores. What's the problem about it?
With a temp like that I wouldn't care at all.

Core temp variance is normal if it is within a few degrees, is the screen shot above of all cores loaded? Your coolest core is 35 and your hottest is 50. A 15 degree difference usually does not occur, but you are beneath your thermal threshold.

For instance my 2683 V3 after 5 mins of stress testing the difference of all my cores is only 4. Hottest core only reaching 38 degrees, package temp 40 degress, and CPU socket temp 39 (running a 280mm Swiftech watercooler).

Blue indicates coldest core
Yellow indicates hottest core
Red indicates motherboard socket temp




On a side note I am very impressed how cool the 2683 V3 runs. On the same loop my OC'd 5820K ran 68 degrees (even not OC'd still ran 56 degrees).

That 2690v4 is missleading by the seller I doubt it's even a 2690v4

My 2690v4 qhv5 es scores In the 2000's. Some sellers on eBay are quite missleading in their titles

The 100cb higher score than the listing seems to be because you have set the BCLK to ~104MHz and maybe your system is more optimised :)

Right now the choice seems to be between the V4 chips so I can use the faster RAM:
Intel Xeon E5 2683 V4 ES QHZE Remarked as SR2JT Equivalent to QHUY 2.0GHz CPU (16C, 2.0GHz all cores, 3.0GHz single core, 2.5GHz uncore, ~1800cb score, $360 shipped)
Intel Xeon E5 2650 V4 ES QHV6 2.2GHz 12Core 30MB 105W LGA2011-3 Processor CPU (12C, 2.2GHz all cores, 2.4GHz single core, 2.4GHz uncore, ~1400cb score, $250 shipped)

What do you think?
