For anyone who is still interested in Xeon 8273CL - here is my full analysis on the CPU.
Basically:
- It can't work in 4-way / 8-way due to being locked down to 2-way physically inside the CPU
- It needs a special version of microcode, and once that presents, any Supermicro X11 motherboard should be able to use it (M/B still must support 165W TDP)

Ok, i finally got myself an Asus Pro WS W790-ACE and tried all my available processors on it. Bottom line: the E3 stepping processors do not work with any of the available BIOS. Tested processors:
Q16Z Xeon Platinum 8461V stepping E3 - stops at code 00
Q0MN Xeon Platinum 8468 stepping E3 - stops at code 00
QY36 Xeon Platinum 8480+ stepping C2 - stops at code 04
Looks like only D stepping processors working with this motherboard. Will have to return Asus - which is quite sad, the deal was good and the motherboard is in an new open box condition. And i really like the layout and features. Such a bummer
Not sure i want to spend money buying D0 version of processor - will probably just stick with the tested and tried Supermicro board for now.

i got some more POST codes with injected C-stepping microccode in the BIOS. the ref.codes may too actual to init.the old stepping thought.
normaly not the task of ME. and same cpuid and microcode.
i noticed the D-Stepping run with DMI4x8 on my W790 Ace. maybe E steppings SPR-SP can't.

QQ87 is A0 50655, microcode not supported by intel since 2019

I'm currently running two 8268 ES qq9e on a X11DPI-NT with bios 3.6 and get memory controller errors when I try to populate 4 Intel 256gb dcpmms. I have am using TSV ram. Anyone have insight into if what might be the issue before i send back the optane?
Does this mean that D0 ES SPR is like the stepping 6 Ice Lake xeons and we are likely to see long term support on the W790 Ace? I was thinking of building an Ice Lake system with the stepping 6 ES or QS but it looks like using a D0 ES2 SPR-SP is better? What do you think?
no. Ice Lake D0 is production stepping microcode and latest.

Referencing post above - just saw SPR with strange E5/S3 stepping during one of today's communications with sellers over the ebay..
(for some reasons most of them are a bit lazy to publish details about ES/QS or correct CPU pictures with product code and production date lines to derive QS generation, and consequently expected stability and functionality)..

I've asked every China-based ebay supplier (about dozen already) for a picture of actual SPR QS CPU label (to derive production date from FPO and QS generation) - everyone either keeps pretending they don't understand or dodging with sending some other information).. IMV that is a bit of a red flag, I wouldn't want to get any QS produced in first half of 2022, prefer getting Q4-22 or Q1-23 (if those exist),, worst case Q3-22 but sellers really do make this very difficult.
Perhaps it's worth just keeping an existing 8461V kindly sold by kizune, and wait for proper discontinuation of SPR by DCs while they move to Emerald Rapids.

They know what is up very well, hence the "nix verstehen" tactic. Big red flag. Money is tight even at hyperscalers for the next 2-3 years I imagine, replacement could take awhile. Unless security landscape forces their hand should a -50% integer performance critical fix become necessary. Make sure to qualify all DIMM sockets and also PCIe slots that they work after CPU swap. 50% yields of Intel 7 tells me the other 50% also have higher fail rates when subjected to a few months of intensive workloads. I like the more solid stuff hence 14nm++ i.e. no later than Cascade Lake.

ok, ok, let's put it this way: it was unusual for me after months of dodging D0 (and unpleasant experience with it, not like I'm big fan of causing self-harm) and seeing plenty of E2/E3 around.
