Hey there,

HP is selling off Gen10 DL385 to make room for Gen10+ versions and I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade those with 7742 CPUs. I already have a DL385 Gen10 which I upgraded with dual 7452 CPUs and would like to have another with dual 7742.

Problem is: Unlike 7452, 7742 are not officially supported on Gen10, only on Gen10+. So did anyone try to upgrade their Gen10 with 7742? Did it work?

Thanks!

If you send me your 7742 I would be happy to install it in my gen10 and run it for a few years just to be sure... To be serious both of those CPUs have the same TDP rating so in theory both should work unless they specifically lock out the 7742.

7742 has a TDP of 225w, that is higher then 200w of 7702 which is the most powerful officially supported CPU in Gen10. Sounds like not a lot but might bring VRM on it's limits.

I have decided against purchasing Gen10, while tempting it will most certainly not support 7003 Milan CPUs and for me ability to upgrade is more valuable than couple of hundred dollars. So, I will go for a Gen10+ when they will become widely available.

I see, I didn't realize the TDP limit was only 200w so I definitely wouldn't attempt a 225w CPU. The only thing the older gen10 has going for it is the price, you can still find them for screaming deals if you look. Not sure about the 10+ pricing.

Also, why do you think the Milan CPUs won't be supported? They should have models with TDP ratings that fit and I believe even the gen10's have a large enough BIOS chip to support the newer CPUs. The question is of course whether or not HP will add support but theoretically the platform should handle Milan.

Good luck!
