I am not precious about low health. Would be much more concerned about uncorrectable errors. If you plan heavy writes yourself, sure. But for most regular usages, I think a 20% health enterprise TLC SSD has probably a lot more endurance left than a brand new retail QLC drive.
Agreed, these are "enterprise" drives afterall. But for 20% health it's too much money and hassle.
For that Health Status I'd expect max 100 EUR including VAT (imported), so say 80 USD.
IMHO it's not only about the TBW (which in itself is kind of an artificial Figure, as it depends on the Manufacturer's Aging Model / Expectations, as well as the Write Amplification of your Application).
We've seen and kept seeing plenty of Hours-related Bugs. Not only 32k Hours but also 65k Hours (Micron 5100/5200/5300, with the Micron 5100 no FW Update available except HPE/Lenovo, and of course I have a non-OEM Drive for once) !
That Drive is 8 Years old. My Experience with the (few) Samsung PM863a I got was that I could NOT do the Dell Firmware & trim the Header "Trick". So you are essentially Stuck with a Paperweight, even if you marginally write on it
.Sold already. Wish I got there sooner. I have 2 3.84tb PM863a's and they run slow af (~100MB/s) at 60% health. The beginning of this thread helped me move to all 4tb sata SSD storage after being on 1-2 TB HDDs. Easy to make room for sata. So please do share more
They shouldn't behave that way. I remember I bought a bunch of Dell PM863 3.84TB that were similarly a bit slow (~100-200MB/s). Luckily because they were Dell I could update their firmware. And immediately after the firmware update the performance jumped back to specs.

QLC, yeah, I'd agree, but with all the MLC out there, $180 for a 20% health, 0.7DWPD, 3.84TB drive is a really bad deal. The only exception would be if you really, really needed 3.84TB of very fast but essentially read-only drive (i.e., treat it as WORM).
I'd much rather get a 400GB Intel DC P3700 for $150 and put it in front of 10-20TB of spinning disk as cache. Even if the P3700 was also at 20% health, it would still give you 2.4x the total write of the PM863a in the listing. But, if the P3700 is anywhere close to full health, it's 10x or more total endurance left. That gives you a working set of 400GB, which is pretty good for most use cases.
You could also get an 800GB Intel DC P3600 for about $150. You'd only get about 4x the total write of the PM863a in the listing, but your working set would be 800GB.
Or, you could spend about $400 on a 2TB P3700 and get it all...insane endurance and a fairly large size.
you are comparing a 1w solution to a 20-30w solution. You don’t go for a SATA SSD for raw performance. To me SATA SSDs are still great if you want the low noise and low consumption with slightly higher than HDD performance. And keep in mind most of home use (NAS) is essentially WORM. 99% health enterprise SSDs are totally unnecessary for that.
There's a $888 1.6TB p5800x on ebay from what appears to be a reputable Chinese seller.

Yup I saw that and rushed here. Bought one. We’ll see if its legit. I assume it is given the guy has a ton of stuff for sale and high reviews. If its a scam I mean ebay buyer protection is excellent and there is always chargebacks.

3.2tb is unobtainable, I’ve only ever seen it sold for 10k.
please report back if you got an actual p5800x. I’ve had some nightmare experiences with decommissioned Chinese parts. They’ve arrived defective or outright scams and I’ve had to pay shipping to send it back. It’s always some weird address too that almost looks fake so the seller can claim they haven’t received the return.
Oh its a risk for sure but I certainly was not paying nearly 2k for one. Hopefully it works out lol. I'll report back for sure. It's supposed to be delivered from China to me (in the USA) in only about a week which is pretty quick. It was already shipped too and I bought it at the time of my previous post. Wild stuff. Big if true.
Could just be stock that they need to clear, id not exactly expect them to be hot sellers with how niche they are plus there was such a massive leftover stock of them.
And if they have been sitting on it for a while (like optane in general) that is still a hefty profit for them.
If its a reputable/established seller id not have a problem with buying it if i was in the market for more optane.
Bought a stack of 1.5tb p4800x cards at a price even further below market a few years ago and got brand new cards.
If I've found the correct one they seem to have three separate listings, each with 100 units originally available but presented in different currencies (788 EUR / 699 GBP / 888 USD) and with separately tracked stock levels.
Would it be unusual for a seller have 300 of these drives and then divvy them up for sale to different markets in this way, or is that a red flag?
I do kinda want one for a scratch disk but the cheapest is the USD listing, which becomes 1269 AUD after conversion and that's a lot of... well, scratch.
