From my experience with thousands of pm/sm 8*3 drives not really, I only had a handful fail and no particular firmware version.
the pm/sm are usually all good, maybe except sm863 non a? I belive it was
the firmware is easy to find, but rarely/ever need it

Somebody is grabbing these as fast as they pop up.
Showed up today, Samsung PM1643a, 8600 hours and 0.12 gb read/0.221 gbw on #1, exactly the same on the other. 88 Start/stop on 1, 89 on the other. I do need to do firmware,
I hardly have any 10 years old electronics that went bad. Not saying that older used SSD won't have marginally higher failure rates. But the benefit of buying them so cheaply is that you buy many and treat them like cattle not pet. You buy for $100-150 something that is worth north of $500 new. And I think the added redundancy more than makes up for the marginally higher failure risk.

10 years old hardware still do the job. I still run Ivy Bridge at work and have no plans to retire it. In fact as long as it runs without any problems, I will not replace it the next 10 years, it just too much work.
