No Information on Flash Cells Manufacturer, Technology (MLC/TLC/QLC), not much basically.

Although from this I'd Infer a DRAM/Cache-Less QLC Drive:


The Daily Writes Per Day (DWPD) Figure has to be taken with a lot of small Grains of Salt since IIRC it heavily depends if you mean Sequential Writes or Random Writes (not sure if it's tied to Write Amplification, but from other Drives I think there was a difference of 4x ... 10x). I might confuse that with something else though, so do your own Research :) .
TLC according to a few other sellers specifications, but without a proper datasheet it's probably anyone's guess. Strangely hard to find good information about the drive. But looking at their other available products I guess it's not QLC. They also rank it Grade B but unclear why.

I've requested SMART data from the seller just out of interest to see if there's some more info.

For this price I'd think it's worth a "gamble" if you're US based and easily can return it if you're not satisfied.

Submitted an offer for 10 @ 50 each. Seller countered with 115 each. Not for me but might benefit others.
The List Price of 139 USD is actually quite reasonable for being SATA ...

50 USD / Piece seems really low, I'd be surprised if anybody went below 100 USD let alone for a SATA Drive.

EDIT 1: note however that the 3500/3510/4500 Series typically is really only read Intensive, NOT for VM Storage or anything like that.

Health is concerning.. 60% on most of the drives
from what I can tell: 64, 64, 64, 66, 70, 70, 79, 91, 91, 95, 99, 99.

65% health calls for a discount, but not a massive one, 79%+ not really. If I had any appetite for 3.84TB SSD I would probably bid at $1300-1400.

It's hard for me to lose the concept of spinning rust. A spinner at 60% health is totally worthless.

I missed the Health Rating actually.

I though the S4500 would be similar to the S3500, but indeed the S4500 seems quite better compared to the S3500 in terms of TBW at least.

So you are right, several TB were written.

BTW, the 2 x 3.2TB I got from Germany had approx. 2 PB written on them, still just a Fraction of the ~ 18 PB micron Rating ;).

I'd say the last 50% is a crapshoot so these 60% drives are close to death. Think sub $1k makes a little more sense, considering the 265x 3.84TB drives selling for $100 previously with much better health.

I see a similar reasoning from @luckylinux. $100 isn't the market price, it's the previous low in term of great deals. I once bought a bunch of 99% health 3.84TB SATA SSD for $55 each. Doesn't mean that from now on my expectation should be that anything above $55 is overpriced.

As for 60% being close to death, I am not sure what you base this on. Particularly given that the great majority of SSDs are bought by this audience for storing stuff, not for continuous writing, and will likely never go down more than another couple percentage point health for their remaining life.

Always better to Post if in Doubt ;) . And maybe somebody will still want them after all. Low Power Consumption and for a NAS as Samba/NFS File Share & Storage Type of Usage, these would mostly be fine. Just don't beat them to Death with Workloads like Proxmox VE Storage or even Container Storage (let alone iSCSI / Block Storage).

What makes a market price isn't the quantity one seller offloaded once, it is the price most sellers settle for on average.

Well, at this point the only thing I "need" is a 2nd box to act as a secondary backup for my small amount of important data on unraid. Maybe proxmox running a TrueNAS VM for funsies since I haven't used it yet, or just a 2nd unraid server.

Which that X7-2L is about 1 billion percent overkill for. All I'd "need" to do is toss some hdd's in it. Do you know of any chassis similar in styling that wouldn't be such a power hog?

This is the Enterprise SSD Thread and we are talking about a Chassis with mostly 3.5'' drive Bays ...

If I were to guess, probably something like this paired with a NOT very high Rating PSU (so it can be more efficient, but of course that depends if the HDDs are programmed to start up sequentially, via the Backplane, otherwise you WILL need a high Power PSU):

My Experience with Supermicro SC216 (for 24x2.5'' Drives) and SC826 (for 12x3.5'' Drives) is that you need to remove the redundant Power Supply and preferably get something "with Wires" instead of their golden Finger PSUs, if efficiency is your main Goal and you want to go all the Way towards that Goal.

FYI the "Platinum" Rating of these Supermicro (and other Brands of) PSUs with Golden Fingers does NOT include the extra Steps needed to further step down 12V to 5V & 3.3V. It's just assessing the Efficiency of the Conversion from 110VAC or 220VAC to 12VDC.

Using a PWS-920P-SQ Power Supply (920W) or similar is going to hurt efficiency badly.

Of course, if the Backplate does NOT do sequential HDD Spinup, you don't really have a Choice. The Startup Current of 12 HDDs all at once will require a ~ 1kW PSU no Matter what. It would trip due to Overcurrent otherwise :rolleyes: .

If you are in the US a Supermicro SC826 will probably be a bit cheaper and you could change the PSU to e.g. a PWS-501P-1R, assuming sequential HDD Spinup. Based on what was reported in the other Thread, that could shawe off 24W (80W -> 56W at Idle without HDDs) i.e. 30%.

Lately it looks to me pretty much like a well coordinated Cartel which Prices very similar across the Board and upwards of 150 USD for 3.84TB:rolleyes: .
All the large sellers are in it longterm, none of them have a incentive to drive prices down.

That may have been true...20 years ago. I don't use staggered spin up and been running 24x HGST SAS HDDs off of a HP 460w PSU...for years. Yes, your power supply should be high quality, but you don't need to huge size it just because of HDDs.
Are those 2.5'' or 3.5'' ?

**IF** it's not an Issue all the better, but I just prefer to be a bit Cautious before recommending a low-Power PSU with that many HDDs.

Drive Inrush Current due to the startup of Motors is a Thing. Unless your PSU has excellent Overload Capability for a short while or the HDDs nowadays use a Soft Starter to start up (which I doubt, given the Space available, plus it's extra Cost for them).
