Hi,
A seller on Ebay Germany is currently auctioning single nodes of a Supermicro Micro-Cloud cluster. The Mainboard ( Supermicro X10SLE-F ) can be used with E3-1200 CPUs (V3-V4) and 4x DDR3 Memory.
It includes 2x 1GB Ethernet and 5x SATA Ports.

Specs: X10SLE-F | Motherboards | Products - Super Micro Computer, Inc.

I got one for awesome 1 Euro (they usually go for around 1-6 Euros).

I will try to run one of theses without the micro-cloud chassis as the control pinout from the Chassis to the single mainboard are basically near to nothing (Power-Supply + 6 control cables).

With 5 SATA ports, this little boards sounds perfect for a remote-controllable E3-1220L CPU Mini-NAS.

Have a look at:
Artikel zum Verkauf von unitedcolo | eBay

PS: Yes, the seller also sells the whole package (Chassis + 16 Nodes). Since the single node are so bad in the pricing (in the Sellers perspective) I sniff huge reduction if you ask the whole thing.

PPS: May be the following direct links to the auctions help:

I used the .DE site not-logged in and the .COM site logged in, neither had any products listed... that's odd normally they say "WIll not ship to your location" or something along those lines, I haven't seen items hidden ? Especially not when Logged out... very strange! But good to know this behavior exists.

Update:
On desktop I see 0.
On mobile they're all there.

Very odd

Possibly. Very weird though that it only hits some articles and then only some browsers.
IPs on mobile and desktop both should be of regional pools ...

interesting find. based on the pictures i'd say it will mostly just be 12V coming from the backplane as well as a standby rail or similar. What looks tricky is the fact that you've got that thin cable, which is clearly for signaling of some sort. According to SM manual, it is a connection to the PDB (power distribution board), but that board is again connected to the backplane, so I bet there is some i2c going on between the boards and the chassis. it may also just be fans, but i would be surprised. In any case, definitely an interesting project. Keep us posted on your findings if you try to power one of those directly.

Hi

The connector on the small daughterboard looks very similar to some other proprietary SM motherboards.

Some time ago I had a lot of fun getting the information required to power a single motherboard node from a Fat-Twin unit. Specifically a X9DRFF. I posted a thread about it

It looks to me like the connector is very similar and I think you might have some luck with this approach using a SM Mid-Plane PDB, these have some logic and will power fans etc.

I used the SM BPN-PDB-F418.

This will provide power to 4 blade units. It can also be to power peripheral devices with the use of additional add-on units such as the BPN ADP F418.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Finally, I got my CPU. I had a Heatsink and Memory at home, so I can give it a try.

On these auctions you have the AOM-PDB-MC12 included.
X10-AOM-PDB-MC12.jpg

Based on the colors and common sense I expected these boards just need 3x 12V and 4x GND lines, as well as +5V Standby.
So I used an ATX extender cable, cutted and rewired these cables and connected PS_ON to GND on the ATX power supply to power it up.

The LED5 is going solid green and after a while it starts blinking green.

I checked out the MAC address of the IPMI LAN, connected an ethernet cable and checked out what I can see on the line:

Looks good! So I just added that IP-Range to my ethernet card on my PC and give it a try:
Code:

Great! So I tried ADMIN/ADMIN on http://146.0.33.34:

X10-ipmi-password.png
... but sadly the username/password is wrong.

I tried out Factory-Resets on the mainboard as well as adding a fully installed drive which will run an SSH-Server on every ethernet device it will find, to get on the IPMI locally. However, that didn't work so far.

Since I have no VGA/Console-Cable for it, I am currently out of ideas. If someone has another idea what I can do on this headless unit, let me know.

I will hunt for such a cable (CBL-0218L, mentioned at Supermicro | Products | SuperServer | MicroCloud | 5038ML-H12TRF ) and will try again.

TL;DR: I see some live-signs, IPMI user/pass is not factory. Will figure out more soon.

Cheers

Daniel

That cable looks almost exactly like the ones for HP blades. P/N is 409496-001. Can't say 100% sure it will work, but it definitely looks very very similar, and I bet its much easier to source than the Supermicro one.
