The simple answer is WD have basically no SMRs in externals (3.5") as far as anyone has ever found. They do have SMRs in portables (2.5") e.g. WD My Passport 5TB DAS Review: Compact and Consistent Capacity Champ Gets SMR Right but that's about it. It's possible their 18-20TB SMR drives will eventually show up in externals so maybe take some care with those.

The current sale on the 10/12 TB Easystore is over now. I passed. My last purchase was 6 x 10 TB for $159 in December 2018 / January 2019 .

I wonder when WD is going to start shipping 16TB EasyStore drives.
