In short I was building a new server with a single proc SM server board with an E5-1620v2. I then came across a desktop board for a great price and I was going to use an E5-1620v3. With costs being the same, the RAM slot count and total RAM being the same wold I benefit anything by staying with one over the other. Having ECC support is not of a concern on this box. I'm wondering is there anything the be benefited by have the V3 over the V2 proc other then it's newer.

You likely lose IPMI with the Desktop Board too... which for many is a deal breaker too.

The v3 also likely idles lower.

I think the v2 is higher frequency, lower power, and their pass-marks are within a couple hundred of each other.

V3 + SM board likely guaranteed to work with NVME the other v2 board might now if that matters.
