If I understood correctly: With the LGA version I don't get a good graphics processor like the BGA version (GT2 vs GT4e). If I want great graphics, I have to go for the desktop version, but risk non-ECC RAM data corruption. Wish I could have both! Curious what the competition offers.

Agreed. And what of the mobile xeon chips, do we have any info about those? Might need to hold out for an ECC xeon powered macbook.
Now that would be sweet. They already did put a skylake chip in the newest iMac along with NVME SSDs

I have to wonder why these aren't shipping with the iris pro graphics and just a "p" version of the normal desktop graphics, they could with good drivers take away buisness from a number of low end quadro/firepro cards with an ISV certified version of the Iris pro

I don't think AMD offers an opteron with integrated graphics.
They have bga apu optys
cute lil quad cores with 128sp.

And they are making Pro series APU's on the FM2+ socket with excavator cores...
Which are not as terrible as you might think.

AMD also has a habit of not disabling features for market segregation.

I don't suppose the E3-1220V5 would have any kind of killer perk (power usage, drastic performance increase, lower price) over an E3-1220V3? Say if I'm looking for a CPU, mobo and RAM for roughly $1000 CAD all in - that is equivalent to this:
CPU - Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W Server Processor BX80646E31220V3 - Newegg.ca
Mobo - SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLL-F-O uATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 DDR3 1600 - Newegg.ca
RAM (x2) - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5SC1VA5584&cm_re=KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G-_-20-139-979-_-Product

Since I have a low but not inflexible budget (1000 Canadabux don't buy a whole lot of server when you include tax+shipping) would a V5 CPU and Mobo offer better value in any way if I'm not interested in NVMe or onboard 10Gbit? I think I know the answer already but I figured I'd see what you guys think before I pull the trigger on the above purchase.

Take a look at the equivilent desktop Haswell and skylake reviews for the V5 you are looking at and that will give you an idea as the desktop chips are basically the same as the server ones. Short version you will probably not see a lot of difference
