I just replaced my broken 836tq backplane. I then got back to my room and remotely started the server. Now everything went ok at first until about 10 min in VMWare suddenly complained about losing storage connections. It seems all datastores connected to the on board lsi3108 controller has been lost. I then thought I had made some mistakes installing the backplane so I went back in and opened the cover and oops, I found I forgot to put back all the three midwall fans! Well everything went back to normal after putting back those fans but I just hope I didn't fry the SAS chip dead!

Next time I will put the fans on the case cover so that I won't forget to put them back in...

modern processors have thermal throttling, it should be fine. Glad you didn't lose any data :)
