I keep reading about SFP+ 10G RJ45 transceivers not working in a NIC because of power usage, where SFP+ is much lower then RJ45.
But, that information is some years old and looking at the Optcore Mellanox transceiver the description mentions it should work.

So, will it work?

Situation: Switch with two multi-gig RJ45 ports and two SFP+ 10G ports.
The SFP+ ports will be used for two servers, one of the multi-gig for my desktop.
In the desktop I would like to put a Mellanox Connect-3 NIC using a SFP+ 10G RJ45 transceiver.

I'm currently doing it with a Mellanox ConnectX-3 and a MikroTik S+RJ10 module with no issues. It even feels less warm than I thought it would, but then again, the run is pretty short and the FreeNAS box it's all in has fairly decent cooling.

Good to know that.

I ordered the card and the module. Should arrive before the 15th of November.
Well, the Optcore no clue because I payed with Paypel and haven't received any mail yet.
