so i currently have a Supermicro X9DRi-LN4F+ V1.20A motherboard. from what i can tell the spec sheet says it support the E5-2600 v2 cpus max TDP of 135 watts. i have read posts on google about people getting 12 core ivy bridge cpus to work. my question to the pros here is will 15 core Xeon E7-2880 v2 ivy bridge cpus work on my board i can get them for under 12$ per cpu. i know it might be an issue with the microcode but google isnt giving me much info on if these 15 core cpus will work in my board

even tho the supermicro website says only e5 2600 v2 cpus are officially supported i know sometimes unsupported cpus might work

NO
wrong socket you need SM X10DBT-T(X10QBi/QBL) or OEM board
E7-2880 v2 = LGA2011-1 R1 (can support E7 v3 & v4)
E5-2600 v2 = LGA2011-0 R0

the 2011-1(R1) is VERY dfferent from 2011-0
E7 CPU have no memory controller, Intel C102 i.e. is the mem.controller for DDR3
on some mboard you can swap the DDR3 memory-cards with DDR4 ones.

Shouldn't exist around the same number of CPUs and the corresponding Mainboards? ;)
2011-0 (v1 v2)
2011-1 E7 (up to 8 socket EX platform)
2011-3 (v3 v4)

and yes you can buy the board for 1000usd.
exspecialy the non defektive ones(thought about reason for sell of the CPU)

The Cisco UCS C460 M4 High-Performance Rack Server (Figure 1) is a four-rack-unit (4RU) server supporting the Intel Xeon E7-8800 v3/v4 or E7-4800 v3/v4 series processor family CPUs, with up to 6 terabytes (TB) of double-data-rate 3 (DDR3) or DDR4 memory1 in 96 slots, and up to 12 small form factor (SFF), hot-swappable2 SAS and SATA disk drives
