I was looking for 4TB wd reds when I saw 5TB drives at shockingly low prices:
The $189 Seagate option - Amazon.com: Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive (STBV5000100): Computers & Accessories

The $218 Seagate option - Amazon.com: Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDT5000100): Computers & Accessories

The Toshiba one is $185 - Amazon.com: Toshiba Canvio Desktop External Hard Drive (HDWC240XK3J1): Computers & Accessories

These are not bad considering 4TB drives start around $150 these days. Are any of these good enough drives inside? I mean $10 more for 1TB extra seems like a good idea over the 4TB red

WD Red's have a history of being reliable NAS drives.

Drives shucked from external cases have a history of being unreliable cheap green drives.

Personally i like my data too much. Removing the drive from the case generally voids the warranty too. So your asking to loose your data and the drive IMO

These are based on the Shingle Magnetic Recording (SMR) so you should look that up as well. I remember some people concerned about reads I think.

On the other hand, I've found drives shucked from external drives to be more reliable, because they haven't been bashed about bare by a 16 year old youth in a warehouse, then kicked around bare inside a cardboard box by an uninterested courier. Your external drive leaves China/Philippines/Timbuktu in a rubber mount, inside a plastic box, inside packing, inside another cardboard box. That's 4 layers of protection not available on a bare drive.

Yes, you may lose your warranty, but I've never had a shucked drive fail, and even if I did the amount I've saved over the years will easily buy a new drive which I can fill from my backups.
