I figured I would make it's own thread and ask some questions.

What is the difference between the M1015 vs M5014?

So far I have this from Patrick "The M5104 has 256MB of RAM cache onboard. You would need a BBU to use it as write cache but still can help for read patterns with no BBU. The other big difference is that it is a proper RAID controller instead of a HBA."

Do I have to do anything special to the M5014 to use it as JBOD?

M1015 = HBA just a zero cache controller, can do simple RAID.

M5014/5 = cached RAID controller

M5014 with no BBU can still write back, just riskier in power cut etc.

JBOD and M5014/5 = set single drive to RAID0 only way to have a single drive show to the OS.
No JBOD, no passthrough.
