I've had this sitting around for a while and I haven't installed it. Here's Dell's installation video:

Notice they clean the thermal paste off when they remove the existing heatsink, but they aren't adding any when installing the liquid cooling version.

Is this a goof, or is this the way?? I really don't have enough PC building experience to know.

BTW anyone that wants to buy one of these, I got it on the Dell web store for less than used kits on eBay. They sell it for one proc with and without the perforated replacement chassis door, so you have to buy both kits for a Dual Xeon system.

EDIT: resolved thanks to r/homelab.

My guess is that the coolers come with some pre-applied thermal paste.
Just check that, and if there isn't any, add some yourself. With these things probably sitting on a shelf for many years, it might be worth replacing the thermal paste anyway.

Edit: gotta love how this is a classic example of "never mind, figured it out"
