I am just curious what is the difference at performance fans I mean they probably ran at higher rpm to have more air flow ? Is it just a dell safe mechanism ?
They give more airflow to cool higher TDP processors combined with the heat nvme's can kick out so there is no thermal runaway. Can't remember if this gen had the option of silver/gold fans. I do remember there was also a high performance heatsink option for the 640 too though.

I want to buy the high performance fans I just want to be sure that it will lower the rpm and noise. I got 3x DC P4610 U2.

Chiming in here as I'm interested too, Optane DCPMM on a R740 seems to push the standard fans to 50% minimum, curious if the HP fans would lower that?

Its a bit of a bad workaround as the server will throw misc errors in iDrac - but if you ONLY need NVMe drives, you can remove the PERC module, the cable going from PERC to expansion board, and the signal + power cable going from the mainboard to the expansion board.

You can also remove the expansion board itself, just leave the backplane, its power cable and the NVMe PCIe link cables. NVMe disks will work just fine, and the fans will stay very quiet.

Tested on an R640 10xSFF config.
