Can anyone help me, I am trying to install an "un-supported" gpu. It is an AMD v340, I have a r730xd and every time I plug it in and power on the server gets stuck at "Loading PCIe, USB and Video".

I have read that I have to have 2 1100w PSUs and have them in non-redundant mode, which I have done.

I am not sure how to pull logs to see why it is hanging. In iDrac it just says boot hung or something to that nature. I have tried setting bifurcation to x16 as well as just leaving it on auto. It is installed in slot 4 on riser 2.

Have you connected the power correctly to this gpu?
You need 2x 8pin pcie
On r730xd you have 8pin EPS-12V plugs - you need adapter for 2x 8pin pcie
(Pardon Our Interruption... something like that - but preferably dell listed part) there might be a problem on some amd cards *and you will need to use 2 eps connectors to power it.
(There was once an issue where you also need to match the power connector on correct slot.)

Next you need to have the right riser, not all raisers are created equal for dell systems.

I have, I have the cables you speak of, I have tried running all power from riser 2, I have also tried running 8pins from riser 2 and 8 from riser 3.

AMD is very touchy about power, i presume you did not get good cables - and are actually dual 4-6pin instead of full dual 8pin (8+6 in v340 case - i recommend looking for dell branded meant for quadro gpu dual 8pin pcie cable), and/or you don't have proper gpu raiser *(like 800JH )
The default raisers poweredge servers come in do not provide 75W as I recall...

Here is what I have. I am still rather new to all this, so thank you for your help. Looking into what you said about the cables, I found a dell part number and I notice that the genuine Dell cable has all 8 pins on the end that attaches to the riser where the cable I was recommended only has 6 pins in the 8 pin connector at the riser... However, it goes to an 8+6 and the v340 wants an 8+8.

This is going to be a really stupid question but can I get 2 genuine Dell 8RFPM and run the gpu off riser 2 and 3 connectors?

I would be more keen to state this is problem with power cable - as stated amd is very picky about its cables.
I don't see why you couldn't try it. *alternatively you can also try RV9T2

*also do you have good enough psu/s?

yeah according to pictures it has wired all 8pins on mobo connector. v340 is 8pin + 6pin isn't it? *(or is it yours 2x 8pin?)

if its 2 8pins then you can disregard one i sent i was under impression its 8 + 6pin connectors.

I would say best option would be getting 2 cables 8pin to 8pin, and try using 2 gpu raisers power plugs. Alternatively you can look for cable that uses all 8pins on mobo connector.

*(question -> i don't remember -> does r730xd raiser power plug is eps 12v cpu plug? or already normal pcie plug?)

Hi,

I too have a similar issue:

I have a Dell SC9000 (which uses the R730 board) and a V340.
However, my card always beeps (continuously) as soon as I turn on the server and won't stop beeping. It would eventually boot in the OS, but the card is not detected.

I managed to stop the beep by using some external powered PCI riser and external power supply (the card would get hot, so I guess it was doing something), however the card would not show up in the OS. The riser was x1 to x16 and it would only work in the x1 slot of the motherboard (which is for the TPM I think).

I too figure this must be related to power.

So I tried this Riser:

together with two of these cables using the 8 Pin from each of the two Risers I have

However, the card would still beep as soon as I turn on the server. Do you have any idea what could be the issue?

@jsamora93 since you card does not beep: Have you checked if you have enabled above 4G decoding and SR-IOV? It seems like the server cannot initialize your card and you do not have a power issue.

I missed this message. How do I find out if it's eps or pcie?

I am fairly certain I have SE-IOV enabled, but I don't even recall seeing 4g decoding, is it in BIOS?

Yes it is in BIOS: "Memory Mapped I/O above 4G". For me it's the second item right unter "SR-IOV Global Enable".

Can you maybe try unplugging one or two of the PCI 8 Pin connectors on the card and see if it starts beeping? That would maybe indicate whether it is a power issue or something else.
