Hi,

I really want to know the opinion of server savvy people concerning the build I am trying to make for a home server. The thing is : are there any pièces missing in the build? There are pieces I thought I didnt need but I am not sure for example: Raid LSI 9260-8i and the Expansion Card and also the Mezzanine and the Mezzanine bridge cards. The following are the pieces that are on delivery or already delivered. So if anyone knows its for a Dell Poweredge c6145 home server. Id still have to make a custom case though.

What's the purpose for this server? File server? Video streaming? Virtualization? etc.

A 4-way CPU setup could easily use up to 300 Watts and still won't be that fast. (4x 6172 is way slower than 2x E5-2640) I won't consider it as a good fit for home server use. Yes it's cheaper for the hardware, but you end up paying $200 extra dollars on power bill every year.

EDIT: I didn't notice that you bought them already. For RAID card you may consider those cheap alternatives such as H200/H310 if you don't need RAID. My point still stands though.

Great idea! It is very challenging to DIY server boards with non-conventional power supply interface. I can't wait to see your progress.

Good cath msg7086. I didnt check any benchmarks before I selected my pieces. I went this time with the price instead. At 9$ for 2 processors * 2 for a total of 18$ for a computer that will be probably way faster than my fx-8320e 8 cores it still seems to be a good deal. Im gonna use the computer for a simulation to start off. And then my goal is to plug in my simulator to a listener c# script that sends in information to a javascript script that isn't accessible any other way (all functions are blocked on the javascript script - can't send out info except for what is provided in the main game API). Its a long shot for that project but either way if it doesnt work im gonna use this server for my projects in Unity3d.

Thank you thomasz. But the interface that i have provided amongts my pieces are the interface provided with the c6145 and are available on ebay now. I have also bought the power button to start up the server on amazon. I am only missing the mezzanine card and its rizer card and that doesn't seem very easy to find unless the mezzanine card for the c6100 is compatible with the c6145 and that one is on ebay.

No frogtech I dont have the chassis. Thats why im scouring the web for every pièces of information to find which hardware i need to power that beast up. I've found a website that says has a mezzanine with rizer and cables for 99$ and says its compatible with c6100 and c6145 but it doesnt even seem to be the same model as the ones I found on eBay.

This is the supposedly compatible c6100 c6145 model with riser card and cables.
Dell XX2X2 / JKM5M LSI SAS 2008 6Gb/s Mezzanine Controller Card

This is the c6145 model that is sold appart from cables and riser card.
DELL POWEREDGE C6145 6GB/S SAS DAUGHTER BOARD MEZZANINE CONTROLLER CARD XX2X2 | eBay

I chatted this morning with a technical support agent of Dell and got transfered twice to finally end up with the sales phone number. I didnt call them yet but they might have the information as to how i can find a riser card and cables. Either way the model of the mezzanine is XX2X2 0XX2X2 CN-0XX2X2 .

Edit: this is the power button Amazon.com: NEW Genuine OEM DELL CLOUDEDGE C6145 PLATINUM EAR Rack Power Button Shielded Wired Plastic Connector Performance Bezel Kit 8N8Y8: Computers & Accessories

Edit: This amazon listing Amazon.com: Dell XX2X2 PCIe x8 SAS 6Gb/s Storage Controller Card Mezzanine Daughter Board: Computers & Accessories says the model is compatible with the c6145 and seems to be the same as the ones on eBay. So i went ahead and checked this website XX2X2 0XX2X2 CN-0XX2X2 | Dell XX2X2 6Gb/s Sas Controller Card for the barcodes codes that are on the stickers there on the pieces itself and they seem to be the same thing. Same revision and same item number. so it must be the same thing right just different dates. but the WF0540072001 number is the same on both parts and the Riser card is #0jkm5m. So i went ahead and bought the pcie16 interface card as seen here RMDWC - PWA, Interface Riser, MSD For Dell CloudEdge C6145/ PowerEdge C6145 NEW | eBay and also bought the mezzanine here Dell XX2X2 SAS 6Gb/s Controller for PowerEdge C6100 C6220 W CABLE

Even though the listing for the Mezzanine says its for c6100/c6220 servers I received also a response a couple minutes ago from an EBay seller about the same part that is compatible with c6145. I might have almost everything I need to run this thing. It cost me way more than I thought it would but it might be well Worth it. Im still wondering how to plug the power button to the motherboard itself coz i dont see any white female plugs on the Mobo and the power button is a white male connector. I guess ill have to figure that out once all pièces arrive or ill keep searching.

I already have the c6145 motherboard, power supply ram, and 4 opteron cpus
for the c6145. Seems I am missing some parts to get this server
running. Can you tell me What are the bare bones items I need to to
get this server up and running ?

I do not know what is essential to get the server working. Seems this
server uses scsi hardrives and I have sata.

I can see 3 pcie riser connectors I called dell and they said its
called RMDWC but they do not have it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ohhhh gods of C6145 on the ServeTheHome.com, could you please help me build this machine?

Over one year after the creation of this post and I hadn't even tried to plug and start anything but here I am.

I have connected all parts as described above in my last post.

1. I sat all processors in place.
2. I sat all ram in place.
3. I plugged in the XX2X2 mezzanine board into the motherboard c6145.
4. I plugged the power supply 1200w in the power distribution board.
5. I plugged the power distribution board in the motherboard interface.
6. I plugged a video card in one of the motherboard rizer board.
7. I plugged the original power button directly in the power distribution board where it is supposed to go.

My dynatron fans don't have any slots for pluggin on the motherboard so no power comes to them. Some G34 c6145 motherboards seem to have the slots for the fans but mine doesn't?

If someone is interested in helping me build this machine, please help!

Hello again!

Here is a video of the current build.

It doesn't have any case fans because it doesn't seem that they are required in order for the motherboard to run as per the post here Dell poweredge c6145 Bare bones home build : Need urgent help is anyone out there? - Dell Community

Still, the motherboard doesn't run and I don't know why. Comon guys. Serve the home. HELP. please

EDIT: I plugged one of the Black wires from the fan controller board INTO the backplane as per page 194 of the Dell PowerEdge C6145 Manual found here DELL POWEREDGE C6145 HARDWARE OWNER'S MANUAL Pdf Download.

EDIT: It might actually be the power supply HP that doesn't have the same output as the original Dell power supply. Hopefully no parts were burned in the process. So I'm gonna have to order a Dell PowerSupply for c6145 1400W or 1100W in order to test the server.
