I know that but giving the context i have no choice.
I live in a building where i have 2 apartments (1st and 3rd floor). I didn't want to have 2 separate networks with 2 isp.
So i used the vertical fiber from the building and i ran fibers from the point where isps provide their fibers (sorry don't know the english term) in the basement to my cellar.
Isp changed the closet for the optical equipment but has been kind enough to replug my fibers.
That way i have only 1 isp and 1 router and have network between my cellar where my servers, main switch and ONT are.
As you could see the downside is i only have simplex fibers at my disposal. If i could have ran fibers to the upper floors i would of course had done that.

that's it :)
as you say not exactly cheap. I don't think i'll buy that.
If i can confirm for the firmware i'll probably buy the switch and compromise with plugging qsfp+ dac cable to 2xSFP+ and 2xSFP28 servers ports. It will let me use the sfp28 ports off the switch for SFP+ with simplex module and SFP+ with RJ45 module.

The current prices have had me looking at the N3224 instead of the N2224 as well, but I have a question for the folks who already have one or might know more about the qsfp28 ports.

From the manual, it seems like the N3224T qsfp28 ports only support 100/2*50/4*25.
Most of my gear has fixed sfp+ ports, so are there any options to use the rear QSFP ports and break them out to support 10gb devices?

I have read about other switches where the asic and/or newer software can support dropping the link speed to 40gb, but I havent seen anything in the release notes nor read any confirmations of this yet on the N3224.

Both qsfp breakout cables and qsfp optics would also seem to require the asic to support dropping to 40gb.

I have also seen dual speed sfp28 optics that support 25 and 10gb, but I dont believe that these will take 25gb on the fibre side and connect to 10gb on the client side.

Does anyone know of a solution for this or should I just be looking at another switch?

Scanned thru this, but didnt see a direct answer. I've got a N2224X-ON, and trying to get it to connect to a legacy NAS via 10G RJ45. Tried 2 different dell compatible gbic from FS in the front ports (yes i slowed them all to 10G) but had no success. Just kept flapping and FS couldnt get it sorted.

Any recommendations on how to get a 10G rj45 out of either the front SFP28 ports, or the 2 Qsfp in the back?

From my understanding that the front SFP28 ports are linked. So if you wish to use it at 10gb then all 4 must work at 10gb. No mix and matching.
the 40gb in the back you need to change the ports from stacking to Ethernet. Then you can use either a qsfp to 4x SFP+ break out dax cable or find an optical version. I believe the optical was posted in a post on this thread.

I am sorry I didn't read your post entirely.

I don't see any way or know of anyway to do baseT out of the 40g qsfp port.

This is a qsfp to SFP+ adaptor. I'm not sure if this will be able to power and cool an SFP+ baseT module.

yes, i knew about all 4 spf28's have to run either 25 or 10G, no mixing and matching. I'll go back and see if i can find the optical version for the qsfp --> 10G. as long as its Dell compatible, i have had a hard time with teh switch refusing to "see" FS ones, even though ive told it to ignore that issue. thx.

Sorry I was editing my post before I saw your response. If you refresh you will see I changed some things.

is your nas baseT only or are you using an SFP+ card? If so use a dax cable unless you need a long run.

Ah, ok... unfortunately, im stuck with the 10G RJ45 on the NAS. Nothing else is available. yeah, its frustrating, i cant understand why even after lowering the 4 front SPF28 ports to 10G, and using one of the 1.8w gbics, it still doesn't work. i just tossed out the Qsfp to see if there was any other way.

There is another option to use the 40gig ports.
Get a qsfp breakout cable then get a SFP+ to 10gig baseT media converter.

For anyone running this switch: How much noise does it produce when running? Are there any issues with the end of Dell support? I've also had people say to stay away from any ON switches unless they are running OS10 with a perpetual license. Are there any issues with this running OS6?

I don't find the fans obnoxiously loud. Mine is rack mounted some 6 feet away from my desk. As to Dell support, I seem to be able to speak with support without any charges.

I bought this switch last summer and I absolutely love it. Mine was brand new in box, and I also picked up a rail kit from a S3124F which replaces the ears of this one. Contrary to the article assuming that there was no more software support, I downloaded and updated the latest firmware from Dell without issue. Noise-wise it's very tolerable to my ears, and seems to run cool (mine has back to front airflow).

The only thing that isn't configurable through the highly granular web interface is oddly enough NTP, which has to be done from the CLI (at least in 6.8.1.7).

Needless to say, I'm super thrilled with this switch, and would seriously consider another Dell if I needed to expand in the future.

How would you compare it to a 2U rack server? E.g. if you've heard something like a Dell R730/R730XD? Just trying to understand if this is going to be worse than that.

This is good news regarding the updates. How loud do you find it alongside your other hardware?
