4 or more for $535.49/ea, if you really want to burn through cash fast.

Ipmi interface is atrocious as well. We have a few of these in our santa Clara data center, absolutely garbage. smc ipmi is better. This is before their idrac stuff that actually works.

just curious... these C6220 machines look very different than most Dell servers. were these originally from another company that Dell acquired?

Likely made by Quanta for Dell.
why would Dell have Quanta build these servers for them after many years of building their own? and why would Dell have Quanta build these servers that didn't adhere to the "Dell theme" of servers? (e.g., the HDD trays are different, the usual Dell PowerEdge design patterns are not used with these) ... what was the story behind that?

The PowerEdge C series was targeted to HPC and hyperscale market [source]. The C series servers were not available for purchase by "normal" users. The hyperscale market does not care about individual server reliability, the most important factors are price, power efficiency and density. Compare this to the typical PowerEdge products which were designed and built for flexibility, reliability and add-ons like monitoring integrations. Presumably, Dell just found that it made more sense to outsource the hardware to Quanta instead of starting from scratch with designing and building low-cost commodity servers.
