Im sure some nodes are different. DCS models in particular. Sounds like he got a server with Nodes from different servers in it. They should be able to coexist but likely came from two different C6100's at some point

This thread is quite long and full of good information, so im guessing a lot of people own a c6100...

I've been wanting to buy a server for ESXi, and I was gunna buy a dl160 G6:
HP Proliant DL160 G6 1U 2X Intel Xeon Six Core L5639 2 13GHz No HDD 72GB RAM 883585721801 | eBay

Then I found these on ebay:
Dell C6100 C6105 Cloud Server 6X 1 8GHz AMD 6 Core Hex Core 144GB RAM 3X 250GB | eBay

then this thread! (which is very interesting)

and then i found this thread:
http://forums.servethehome.com/processors-motherboards/3100-dell-3-node-amd-dcs6005.html

It looks like in the last thread they have things pretty much figured out and got stuff working well.

My questions are this:
Do any of you own both a c6100 and the 'DELL C6100/C6105 CLOUD SERVER 6x 1.8GHz AMD 6 CORE (HEX CORE) 144GB RAM'?
It seems like these c6100/c6105's were built for a specific client, and there has been a lot of work getting them working.

Would I be good with one of the ones above? Or would I be better off buying a c6100?

If everything I have read is correct, It looks like the 6x 6 core boxes are a little bit slower, not multithreaded, in general have more memory (but i believe that it is slower memory) is that right?

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

To be honest i wouldnt touch one of the DCS 6005's. So much drama and the processors are so outdated now.

The C6100's as long as you dont get a (highly different) DCS model are fairly well explored and solid machines. They are getting a bit pricey though.

Im running a pair of C6100's. One DCS (but identical to a normal C6100) and one not.

The 6005's running around look to be a good match for the previous gen C6100's not the current gen. For longevity and bang for your buck id grab a current gen C6100 TY3.

But obviously thats personal choice.

Edit: Im more interested in seeing how the C6220's end up priced when they hit in large numbers now.

Clownius so the auction actually says c6100/c6105
is that the same thing your talking about c6005?

You mention DCS (can you explain that bit a little bit more) how does one tell the difference?

DCS is Data Centre Solutions if i remember rightly. But its Dell Servers for customers big enough to dictate specs if they choose to. They may dictate they want a certain configuration node wise and that includes differences like no mez card, different bios etc. The only real way to tell is look inside the machine and/or check the service tag number with Dell. If no record turns up its probably DCS

C6100 = Intel based standard server (beware there are custom ones running around like the TY (unlike the normal TY3) that are very non-standard)
C6105 = AMD based standard server
C6005 = DCS version of the C6105 with some seriously weird spec decisions like only being wired/capable of handling 3 nodes, not allowing for hot swap PSU's, needing custom BIOS's etc. Obviously made for a specific customer and generally sold on eBay as a C6100 or a C6105.

Most eBay sellers are not aware of the differences. They may have a few hundred servers they brought bulk and they look similar so they sell them all as the same thing.........

Check carefully what your getting if you can.

There arent any SATA3 mezz cards for this are there? Also, did someone state that the max speed for the onboard sata controller is 500MB/s total?

There are not, but there is a fairly rare LSI SAS2008 mezz card available which does SATA 3 over SAS. The LSI 1068 is much more common but does not give SATA 3.

The ICH SATA is good for about 550MB/s.

I have been after a C6100 for some time now, here in the UK they are pretty hard to come by.

Anyway one popped up today, does the below seem like a good deal? pretty sure this means 96GB memory per server which is way overkill for me! The 4x 300Gb drives are not much use, but guess they could be used for some VM storage.
They also have a barebones with no CPU/Memory/HDD for £475

Buy It Now Price: £2,215.00 (Including UK VAT & Shipping)

Specifications:

Chassis2U Rackmount, includes 4 x Hot Pluggable servers (nodes)
12 x 3.5" Hot Swap HDD SAS Bays
Each Node Server is as below
CPU

2 x Intel Xeon Quad-Core 3.06GHz (X5667) Processors

32-Cores - VT-x, VT-d, Hyper-Threading & Turbo-Boost Technology

RAM96Gb PC3-10600R Memory (12 x 8Gb) - 12 x DIMM slots per node
Hard Drives4 x 300Gb 15k SAS 3.5" Hot Plug Hard Drives Installed (1 x HDD Per Node)
RAIDLSI SAS1068E-IR RAID Controller
Network CardIntel 82576 - 2 x 1Gb and 1 x 100Mb Dedicated Management Port
PSU2 x 1100W Power Supples
Part NumberPowerEdge C6100 - XS23-TY3
I/O Slots:

Hi nry

I read it as 96 GB for the whole server considering:

RAM96Gb PC3-10600R Memory (12 x 8Gb) - 12 x DIMM slots per node
Hard Drives4 x 300Gb 15k SAS 3.5" Hot Plug Hard Drives Installed (1 x HDD Per Node)

On the harddrives there he writes 4x300GB but then clarifies it is 1 in each node. I guess he meant the same above. Could be wrong. Quite an important bit since those 3x96GB are quite important for making it a great deal.

Now I am re-reading it with less wine in my blood I think you may be right! Haha
Going to drop them a message on monday and get confirmation.

nry: I'm assuming it's the ones from etb-tech you've been looking at?
Looks like it's 96gb per node.

Dell PowerEdge C6100 XS23-TY3 Node Server

I'm so tempted to get one. I'm just thinking if it's better to get the barebone and source CPUs and memory somewhere else. I don't relly need 384 GB and those X5667 are a bit overkill for me.

Well I was looking at their eBay shop, but looks to be the same server.

I was looking at the barebones, looks like you can get Xeon E5520 for around £20 each on eBay. But then memory is pretty expensive!

If thats really 96GB per node its a damned fine deal. Sell off half the sticks on each node to get some of the $$$ back if its more than you need and maybe even the X5667 and buy L5520's instead or something

Spoke to ETB tech today.
That top end one for £1815 ex VAT/£2178 inc VAT comes with rack rails, it is 96GB of ram per node and it does have a RAID card per node.

I had a quick browse on eBay for those components (previously sold ones) and to build that could cost £2695 roughly inc VAT.

Also spec'd up a lower E5520 build using their barebones and 48GB RAM per node, coming out at roughly £1100-1250 depending on memory module size used.

Then I'd want 3 more 10GbE cards which will probably be £100 each!

This is probably a bad idea haha

You answered your own question on that but yeah the DCS AMD 3 node versions only fit 3 nodes. God knows who wanted that custom setup. Maybe a limitation of the PSU?
