Damn Dell and their custom BIOSes/Sockets, if these C6100s weren't so cheap I wouldn't touch any Dell servers with a ten-foot pole.

Btw there are single XS23-TY3 nodes for sale on ebay too, I am sure those eBay sellers also have empty nodes lying around in their warehouse after they sold all the CPUs/Ram sticks, those could be great for replacing with newer Supermicro twin motherboards if they fit, just need to find a way to mod the power cable.

I am happy with the price/throughput and all, but some nodes could use something faster single threaded.

What kind of RAM do these take? What would it cost to upgrade one from 96GB to 192GB? (24x4GB). On ebay, the difference is $900 -> $1400.

Browsing shows the following:
You can put 1, 4, 6 or 12 DIMMS per sled.

48GB per node maximum using Unbuffered memory; 192GB per node using Registered memory. Systems feature 1 or 2 processors each controlling 3 memory "channels" of 2 DIMM slots each. For best performance balance the total memory capacity equally between both CPUs. Overall memory speed is dependent upon the processor model and memory configuration: 1 DIMM per channel enables memory speed of 1333MHz; 2 DIMMs per channel reduces speed to 1066MHz; maximum speed with quad-rank DIMMs is 1066MHz with 1 DIMM per channel and 800MHz with 2 DIMMs per channel.

2GB/4GB/8GB DDR3 (1333 MT/s)
16GB DDR3 (1066 MT/s)

For those currently playing with the C6100's and have the mezzanine add-in cards, would you be willing to provide part numbers for the cards and pictures if you have them. Lastly, the hardest part to find online, if you could take good picture of where they are installed, that'd be the awesomesauce!

Reason I ask: Dell does mezzanine add-in cards for a lot of their PowerEdge servers. Of particular interest to me is the 'P71JP', which is a mezzanine add-in card for the R620 and R720 servers. It provides dual 1Gb and dual 10Gb interfaces on a single card. If this could be adapted to the mezzanine slot on the C6100, that'd be GOLD!

The ones for the C6100 are very different from what you linked for the R620/720. It does not appear that they would be easily interchangeable. Take a look at examples of the LSI 1068e SAS card (Y8Y69) here or the 10Gbe card TCK99 (here).

I did miss the spare parts list at the end of the original post. Patrick really put that together well - tons of great info.

Looks like Quad NIC in the PCI-e slot it shall be - thank you sir!

As far as memory goes, is 1 / 4 / 6 / 12 the only supported configuration of DIMMs, or just the optimal? Bought some lots of memory and now I may have a few extra. Woops.

Optimal is 3 or 6 DIMMs per CPU (3 or 6 with a single CPU populated, 6 or 12 with both). Other combinations work, but memory interleaving is 3-way so your memory bandwidth will suffer terribly unless you maintain groups of 3 per CPU.

Hi Patrick,

One caution regarding the Dell 2.5" to 3.5" converters: The quality control is not very good. One of my four had mounting holes drilled 2mm too far forward, which made the SATA connection intermittent. If anyone buys these, be sure to double-check theirs. A bit of filing fixed my issue, but I have to say that I was disappointed.

Ah was just baout to buy them. From picys they look like the most solid one on the market. Maybe still will give a chance

Ah! cafcwest - had a similar issue. I have a 2.5" with no SATA cables and didn't come originally with heatsinks/ power supplies.

It apears that many of the 24-bay C6100s were configured with SAS Mezzanine cards, but the cards have been stripped, leaving no connection between the motherboard and the interposer board at the back of the motherboard sled.

If that is the case for your machine then you need cable 6J3R2, which has six SATA connectors on each side. This cable simply connects the motherboard SATA ports to the SATA ports on the interposer board. These are just normal SATA cables, so you can rig your own if necessary, but the Dell cable is superior in that all of the cables are the right length, they are bundled so as to fit down the side of the chassis, and one of the connectors is right angle so that is does not interfere with the PCIe card slot.
