It is not an expander backplane. It is direct connect via sff connectors.

The procs are going for about 200 a piece.
The mb looks like they are a little over 300, I think you could find a different mb cheaper but that is what that is going for atm.

So based on ebay prices looks to be about 300 for the case which isn't too bad but it is a direct connection backplane so keep that in mind.

How does one differentiate between case options on these?

Between expander blackplane/non expander
PWM Fans/ Non PWM?

SC846A-R1200B

The letter after the first number will tell you what kind of backplane came with it originally. E = Expander, A/B = Direct Attached via SFF connectors, TQ = Direct Attached via SATA ports

This is a pretty sick deal. All things considered, you get 2 E5 chips and the rare A-backplane(well, not that rare but as expensive as the SAS2 expander backplane) which as already mentioned uses direct connect SFF connectors. I'm pretty sure the A backplane is the only backplane where the LEDs stay lit and flicker on activity. This would probably be a big selling point for some especially if you want a really flashy rack.

The only draw back really to a build like this is you need to be flexible with your HBA/expansion card setup. Whether that means you use 3 HBAs with 8i ports or 1 HBA with 24i ports, etc, etc.

The 36 bay ones throw me off I think it would be easier to make an open 4u chassis quieter, as opposed to the interesting split that has going on. The other side of that is that I would not be able to use all 36 bays or even 24 bays if I tried.

This one also look interesting....though it is 36 bay as well.

WOW 4x LAN AND it has the RAID adapter+ 2x SFF 8088 for external expansion JBOD. Ultra nice find. Expander backplane too.

seller doesn't seem to want to go any lower than $600 on that one. Not sure that I want to spend quite that much on a box with no processors.

rails are included, I am seeing chips for about $200ea unless I am mistaken. making total cost $1100. Also has 4 nics as opposed to 2 in the other server.

You're right, didn't notice. The way I figured it was 725 shipped(so, not a best offer, but clearly you already determined the lowest he's going is 600, which isn't a significant amount of savings), 400 for CPUs, ~100 for rails.

Still looking at this one since it looks to have the SAS2-846EL1 backplane. I have the "846" older version of this chassis with the SAS1 expander, so this might be an easy upgrade to SAS2 and have a nice motherboard once the E5-2600 V2 CPUs get closer to my price range. Most I saw were $200+ like the others have said. I've got lots of 8GB Reg-ECC DDR3 DIMMs, just need procs.

I think the $600-625 price while not a spectacular deal, is pretty fair. The shipping could be a bit lower and that would help. $600 is the counter I received as well.

The listing also said it would include rails, so that is a nice plus.

All of the supermicro chassis are pretty damn quiet if you pick up an "SQ" power supply and set the fans to "low power/performance". I've used gigabit switches that are louder, no joke.
