If this isn't the right location, please move the thread. There's no section for ram, but this forum seems the most appropriate.

Is there an real world difference in 1066 vs 1333 for LGA 1155 xeons?

I know 1333 to 2000mhz scales poorly, rather, there's a huge performance increase if you compare 1333mhz on 1155 vs 2000mhz on 1156, 1156 is trumped.

This is for home use, not a business with multiple users.

My guess is that for a home server there is no real advantage unless you are running something like ZFS that uses the RAM as cache. I'm thinking that in general people are loading their machines up with more RAM than needed due to it's relatively low cost.

This is true. Also remember newer CPUs will continue to use faster ram so faster is good. Also remember to look at the memory timings as many 1333 kits are relaxed timing (CL9) 1066 kits more or less. For a home server, not a huge deal. For something that is getting hammered 24/7 it is a much bigger difference.

Just to add to the confusion, I've read that 1155 CPUs benefit more from RAM bandwidth than previous generations, which were more sensitive to latency (i.e. the CL8 vs CL9 thing). So the premise is that if you can do 1333, even at a higher latency, it will still have better overall performance.

The context of the above was for desktop-class CPUs and applications though. I can't say if it matters on a home server.

Thanks guys.

I got an absolutely killer deal on a 16gb stick of 1066. That's why I'm asking. I'm also sitting on that and 3x4gb 1333. (will either sell one stick or buy another).

You guys got me thinking and Raid Z seems to be a good idea. I need something for back ups as I do NOT want to lose about 2TB worth of files I have on a single disc.

The 1333 would be more ideal for an oracle server (which I have absolutely no clue where to begin with that).

Thanks guys.
