if someone can close this auction for under $425, i think this is a good deal on 8GB DIMMs:

Lot of 17 Hynix 8GB 2Rx4 PC3-12800R HMT31GR7CFR4C-PB Server Memory (136GB) | eBay

4 hours 41 minutes to go, 0 bids so far.
I am almost ashamed to say I have never seen a 8gb ddr4 rdimm, smallest I have seen is 16gb, mostly 32gb, the bigger sizes are just not needed in the systems I deal with or are way too expensive.

I noticed the other day that HPE shipped Kingston branded dimms :-O that’s a big changes from the usual Samsung,Micron,Hynix mix, I think it was Samsung chips but still, probably an indication that the big vendors are really trying to obtain acceptable prices to maintain their profit margins.

that auction was for DDR3, not DDR4. and it closed at $404 which is a decent deal for 2Rx4 PC3-12800R 8GB I think.

HPE shipping Kingston is news to me too... interesting...

I just nabbed 4x16GB PC3L 12800R for $220 shipped.

Gonna put them in one of my supermicro boxes that is filled with 8x8GB to bump it from 64GB to 96GB.

The 4x8 that I remove will go into another server I have to bump it up to 64 total.

I hold out for the PC3L
i have a bunch of those, but i later found out that they have limited compatibility. like on my X9 supermicro boards w/ v1 CPUs, they won't do 3DPC, only 2DPC. they also run slower than their non-L counter parts.

I don't know about Intel, but my C32 SM board has a BIOS option for 'memory performance mode' which will run LV DIMMs at 1.5V and get around some of this. Works well on Samsung RAM, at least...

with that much product/money on the line, i just can't believe that there was no power backup/generator for a few hours? that just doesn't sound right... the conspiracy theorist in me just wonders if it wasn't an accident and just a way to reduce supply in the market to increase margins?

the last remark of that article seems suggestive too:

The NAND flash market has seen a slight oversupply in the first quarter of 2018 dragging down the memory contract prices, according to DRAMeXchange. End-market demand growth is slowing down on seasonal factors, while major suppliers improve their 3D NAND flash production yield rates.

Quick question; since I recently moved to a 2011-v3 setup, I was looking to sell some of my RAM from the system. What do you believe is fair market for 8x16GB PC3L-14900 sticks?

Fair ? Or market ? Haha
I would say the post above by @BLinux is a good indication of market, 14900 probably every so slightly more than 12800 but depends if you want a quick sale or not I guess also.

Assuming this is reg ECC memory
Fair: 40$ a piece
Market: 60$ a piece
Maximum profit: split them up into 2 lots of 4 DIMMs, sneak a "mac pro" into the title and description and sell on ebay for around 300$ per lot

Last year I was tracking and bidding on various lots of the DDR3 ECC memory from a couple of vendors, and most of the time I lost to what I suspect were the same people. I did manage to win a couple. Most of the prices were between about $42-45 per 16GB 2R DDR3 DIMM. Most of the auctions were during May and June. They may have continued longer into the summer, but eventually the vendors who were auctioning no longer had lots to auction. Since then the prices I have noticed have been very high. I'm not sure if there is some kind of lease cycle related to this market or what.

I also noticed that I bought a couple of graphics cards over the summer, and they are probably worth a couple of bucks more right now than I paid for them.

I am still in the market for 16GB DDR3 dimms. Looking for 256GB-1TB.

I would consider it a reasonable price for a private seller and pretty good for a commercial vendor.
