Actually, there is couple of them in SQ available right now at a decent price. Will see how it goes.

More thoughts about cooling this setup. I know you guys run without shroud. Well, on this specific motherboard LSI chip mounted right next to CPU and it does get hot! I wonder if I need additional cooling on it. OR, do I need shroud to get maximum air over motherboard and use passive sink over CPU (which will let me use 5 fan headers on fans in case)

My intel stock cooler fits under shroud. Is it OK to use stock fan and shroud or it will be better to get proper heatsink and remove stock intel heatsink?

You are using a consumer heatsink in a server chassis. The stock heatsink in a Supermicro chassis is passive. I like to use enterprise hardware as it was designed and intended to be used.

Dang... Can someone explain what is wrong and what is the best way to address this? I have this chassis and I have this GOLD PSU. Decided to get Platinum SQ. Everything matched on Supermicro cross-reference chart, etc. They are same dimensions, same look.. Got it today. It does not fit. Board wouldn't connect (connector is too big). Is there different revisions? What can I do now? I was hoping to just set my original GOLD PSU on a side in case this new one ever burns down..

The power distributor is different from a 1200 PS to that used in the 846 case that comes with a 1k28PSQ or 920 SQ PS, you can buy the part, ~120USD new
Power Supply PWS-1K21P-1R 2 1200W 1U GOLD LEVEL PWS WITH PM BUS
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-8824 1 SC846 24PIN REDUNDANT POWER DISTRIBUTOR

Power Supply PWS-1K28P-SQ 2 1U 1280W, redundant single output power supply
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-2824 1 PDB with 23pairs input connector support SC846B

Power Supply PWS-920P-SQ 2 920W 1U Redundant PWS W/ Quiet Mode
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-2824 1 PDB with 23pairs input connector support SC846B

This have to go to FAQ of some kind. Otherwise from all of the topics it sounds like swapping PSUs is not a problem. Now I have dilemma, either sell back SQ PSU I got and don't worry about noise or spend another $100 to install different PDU. At this point cost of project will be $220 and ROI will be negative :)

Unfortunately I can't run my system with both to see difference in wattage. But when PSUs OUT of case hooked to power - Platinum one pretty much silent. And about 2W less on energy use

you can hack to make widen space on the PCB or on the slot.
I prefer to hack on the slot to make narrow...

You can also get used hot-swap distribution units on ebay for cheap. I got one for the 846 for $26 just to have a spare, or for a DIY project with these awesome cheap PSUs :)

T-Minus, look at part numbers. Those PDUs for GOLD supplies (8824) are plentiful on eBay and cheap. But 2824 units not there..

Actually, slot need to be made bigger. I also prefer to modify slot. That was my first idea. Now that I look at PCBs close - they about 1/4 inch wider on SQ unit. Other than that seems like all connectors match dimensionaly.

But will it work? If it works, then this is what I'm going to do. But if it works, what is the reason to make them different?

Do you have SQ platinums or just platinums? Because looking at references posted above - platinums won't work in 8824 either. Maybe you have 2824 in your chassis? Then you can plug in any PSU..

why different?
your 1280W PSU need different PDU slot that basically more amps then the previous on that can hande max 1000W

just be sure contacts on the PCB are aligned correctly to PDU........
I would assume, you never used more than 1000W total :p......

Super! I will update how it works for me. Actually, it's only 80W difference as GOLD one is 1200/1000 and platinum one 1280/1000. My calculated need is about 300W (maybe) :)

I don't think cutting into slot will be better. I basically have to cut walls on connectors. Should be no big deal, but need to be really careful not to damage pins inside. Also, connector will be weakened by doing so. Cutting of piece of PCB off the PSU will be much easier. Also, I won't have to take PDU out of case (too lazy now). Thoughts?
