Hi

I may have a bit of a dump question, I'm not entirely sure what is correct.

I'm looking at a LSI SAS 9201-16i card which supports up to 16 drives.
The backplane I'm looking at is a BPN-SAS2-836EL1 supporting 16 drives.

Now my question is, how do I connect these 2 with each other? In the backplane manual there is only a single port expander. The LSI card however has 4 slots, connected to 4 internal slots. What type of cabling do I need to hook them up?

Maybe I'm overlooking something?

Thanks

Single port on the expander means that it only supports a single port on drives (SAS drives are dual port). You only need a single SFF8087 cable between the HBA and backplane (though 2 would give you higher bandwidth). If you have yet to buy the LSI HBA, you should get a different one though. There's no point in having a 16 port one when the backplane has an integrated SAS expander. A 4/8 port one will support 16 drives and give you similar performance.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, I got confused with the number of ports and number of drives. So even a LSI3008 8 port onboard controller could support more than 8 drives I guess with this backplane?

I have not bought it yet, I'm just going trough options and was a bit confused.

Thanks!

Yes, that's correct. The built in SAS expander in the backplane enables that.
