Hi everyone,

I'm actively looking to purchase a Lenovo M720Q or M920Q mini PC (or any similarly compact form factor). I have
some spare RAM and SSD lying around, so barebone systems are ok. But I prefere to with 16GB+ of RAM and SSD

Here are the key features I'm looking for :

1. Small Form Factor: Ideally, the system should be as compact as the Lenovo M720Q/M920Q series
2. PCIe Slot: Crucially, so i can add a 10GbE SFP+ card

I'm open to considering alternatives as long as they match my requirements and can be shipped to France without any problems

Thank you in advance !

Thanks for the link, however, the current offer of €240 for a single Lenovo M920X seems quite high compared to other options I've
found online :(

You could watch for these deals as they pop up regularly, shipping to France should be no problem. Do not forget you need a riser card which is quite hard to source in Europe, at least for a reasonable price.
With the heat of the 10Gbe card it might be good to have the extra ventialtion holes the M920x and P330 have in their case lids. Also these are able to hold 2 M.2 NVMEs, so a RAID 1 setup is an option if it is to become an important part of your setup.

Edit: Also this nice deal for an M920p might come back

Thank you! I've noticed some attractive deals on the Lenovo M720q/M920q. I'll keep an eye on them!

I also use Dealabs to monitor tech deals (it's part of the same group as mydealz.de), but Lenovo PCs don't appear as frequently compared to deals on mydealz.de. I'll set up alerts for these kinds of offers.

Thanks again for your help !

EDIT: I've seen very resonable price for the riser on aliexpress (and 4+ stars)

Hello Majentas,

I probably sell a couple of M720q next week, one with Intel core i3, other with Intel core i7, 8GB or 16GB RAM, SSD NVME or not (WD SN520 256GB)

I live in France ;)

Unfortunately, these models do not have a pcie slot.
Didn't know that any of them did. I know the Wyse 5070 Extended has one but that's the only tiny I knew that does. I ran the 5070 as a OPNSense router for awhile with a dual port i350 adapter in the slot but it kept over heating so I replaced it. These tiny computers are hard to cool, especially in August.

Yes, MBastian said that it might be good to have the extra ventialtion holes the M920 (m720q too)

Yea, I thought about drilling holes and bolting a 120mm fan to the top but I don't know how well that would work air flow wise. Might have to just cut a hole the size of the fan. And the powering it might be messy.

If you're talking about powering the fan, I have an idea to use a USB port to do so?

I think so, I've seen Noctua's 120mm fans running at 5V so I guess it's possible. Just need a usb adapter
I see them on eBay but I'm doubtful. They come in both 5v and 12v versions and they all look the same. does a USB plug even provide 12v?

Did you see this post depending on your network cards dimensions it might be your best option.
I have never encountered a 12V fan that doesn't spin with just 5V. It's my usual go-to option if I just want a quiet and constant airflow for the last 25 years.

Regarding heat issues. It all depends on what you want it to do. Right now my M920x (I5-8400, 32GB, 2x 1TB Kioxia Exceria G3, Dell I340-T4 and a extern 5TB WD 2.5" drive) is humming along 24/7 at minimum fan speed providing me with several containerized services, an OPNsense VM and a SMB/NFS NAS mirror of my main (and nowadays mostly shutdown) NAS. I've throttled the CPU to 1.3GHz as long as no interactive login is detected and it's located in my sub-basement which has an ambient temperature of 18-23 °C year round. CPU temp delta is ~ +10 °C, NVMEs are a tad higher due to their location. Typically the box draws like 10W but can go out to 20W with hight WAN traffic.

Edit: IIRC The M920x has a beefier heatsink (65W vs 45W) compared to the M920p/M720q. I don't think it matters(?)
