Hello everyone.

I have been updating my home server with some new toys and run into an issue.

the update is esentially a full server revamp except drives, case and some internals fans etc...

I bought :

SuperMicro X8DT3-LN4F MB
2 x Xenon E5670 CPU
64GB ram
and HP 487738-001 468405-001 24-Bay 3Gb SAS Expander

MB BIOS is updated to latest revision, including IPMI firmware.

the new setup is up. BUT I do not see the sas card anywhere.
I only see the LSI on-board controller even in lspci.
any one know what could be wrong and how to trouble shoot?

thanks,

so what are my options?

I also just found out that the on-board controller does not support disks over 2T

this one "
03:00.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)"

I can see the disk but it comes up as 2T even though ti is 4T

I need a 24 drive HBA. I can even use 2x12 disk as long as it is PCIe-8 I have 2 pcie-8 slots on the MB.

any suggestions?

Get a SAS2 HBA and use it with this old HP SAS expander which can do SAS2 (and supports disks larger than 2TB). There are multiple options depending on your use case and willingness to some firmware flashing.
Is this for FreeNAS?

I'd recommend LSI2308 based 9207-8i (or 9205-8i) HP H220 some thing like that. It has on chip thermal etc vs LSI 2008 such as Dell H310 etc. The price difference shouldn't be much and are much easier to flash.

no this is not for freenas.
I have a SuperMicro 24 bay SATA chassis. that is the back plane is not an expander. I literally have 24 SATA 7 pin ports inside.

I run Proxmox VE 4 on it and several LXC containers. since I only have one machine it servers as both a VM server AND data store. so I have several ZFS pools setup that I bind-mount into containers where all storage is shared for everything else.
like I have a network share fro all my other PC to use.
I run a couple of down-loader containers, one with deluge and transmission, one with sabNZB each is bind-mount to specific folder on a pool for downloads. I also run coachpotato to move and organize the download media properly. what I also do is when I move my media library I just drop the files and folders into complete downloads folder and let the management aps take care the rest.

I run Emby server container to stream my library to my TVs. and a FileServer container to provide the network shares mentioned above.

as it is sits now I have 16 drives in the system. the number will go down as 8 of the drives are 2T which will be eventually replaced with 4 or bigger drives so large drive support is important.

will this work?
SuperMicro MegaRAID 8-Port PCI SAS Storage RAID Controller AOC-USAS2-L8I L8A

I guess put this in connect it to the expander, and get 24 ports right?

OK I just got an Adaptec 51245 2268100-R 16 PORT SAS card by all accounts it should work for me and it should work with the expander.
I also ordered the SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cable to linked the two.
keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi. Want to post an updat and more questions.
Got the Adaptec card. Installed and hooked up.
The card is wprking and the go expander is working.
But there is no hba mode.
The adaptec supports jbod but still ask to initialize the disks. Ia there a way to use it as plain HBA ?.

All my disks are zfs .If I Initialze I loose the data. If I can return the Adaptec what I need to look for to get Sas hba?
Thanks.
