Bought a ridiculously cheap SG500x-24p recently which is "as new" but came without the console cable.
Is this DB9 cable just a plain old serial cable or custom which I'll need to order up or solder?

The arse end of the planet
Why need for serial console?

Have the switch connected to a router doing DHCP to any of the further most right network ports and it will will get an address. If in doubt, use the reset button for 10 seconds. When the system light stops blinking, it has an IP, default login is cisco/cisco.

These switches take a while to boot.

ah, maybe I didn't wait long enough for it to boot then when I tried port 24. thank you for taking the time to respond probably saved me hours of searching through old cables looking for a DB9 null modem or $30 at Microcenter!

Most network switch ports these days typically take a db9 (pc/lappy/console server end <-> rj-45 conn (believe it is a rollover pinout) on network device end. A 'blue' cisco standard cable works a wonder on my HP procurve 2910al switch and my Juniper EX3300. Nothing out of the ordinary. My old HP procurve 2824 took a true null modem db9 <-> db9

2cents.
