Down to $75 + $25 shipping. I think these went for 2-3x that.

Nice... When I browse the item, shipping is 55.00 USD... So, he cut 20.00 bucks of total price. For your location with the same discount, 80.00 total. That would qualify as a great deal for this chassis IMHO. But then you contend with the sale tax... :(

But I should have specified (East coast CONUS)... I suspect you are closer to this guys neck of the woods... :)

Even louder when you add a 2U redundant PSU :)

One of the biggest draws for me at the moment with the 4U's is the fact that they can run quietly. I also really want a 2U 24+ 2.5" bay with six or more SFF-8087 connectors. I literally have a pile of old SSDs here that I want to put to use. Thinking about making my own enclosure for them also since that 48 drive chassis got me thinking.

I got my RM31616 for relatively cheap, but otherwise I would have looked for a 4U chassis. The N+1 PSU was the nosiest part, but it has been replaced by a Supermicro 1U Platinum 600W which makes very little noise when not loaded. I have also changed out the 4 80x80x38mm fans for 6 25mm(2 added to the back) ones, I am still watching for overheating though.

If looking for ~8(13 by using a 5in3 cage) drive setup the Chenbro SR107 is a great option in my opinion, but the drive cages are hard to find. Another benefit of the 4U in general is a normal ATX psu will fit most of the time.

Patrick, look at the Chenbro RM418 and 417. The both have options for 48+ 2.5in drives. They use a modular design so maybe able to get just the 24 drive cage(link). Edit: Just found one for $320, no tax free shipping. Little expensive.

No doubt about it.... Quiet is easier (and cheaper) in taller chassis'... The 4U's also have the advantage in that I seem to find that the majority of second hand cards come with full height brackets (so no need to retro-fit or search for a LP bracket to make it work).

No doubt, that 2U (48-bay) is a looker... Hope to see some more come to market...

P.S. Strap all those babies up and put out some numbers... :)

peace,

It's hard to find bargains on 2.5" hot swap cages... I have been hunting around...

Considering the price on the Supermicro 8-bay, I guess this (Chenbro) could be considered a bargain...

It is a nice chassis, IMHO.

I just received one about a week ago. I intend to purpose it as a low power NAS...

Some build plans:

-swapping out the 3-pin fans for some 80mm Vantec Thermoflow's.
-filling it with 2TB WD Reds.
-possible FreeNAS/variant OS (via USB)... still mulling this over.

Also, I was considering the SS-350M1U PSU. It is a 1u Seasonic Gold unit which runs fan-less if not stressed...

Johnny Guru gave this PSU high marks...

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=277

and they can be had for reasonable price...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seasonic-SS...4392?pt=US_Power_Supplies&hash=item27cad029e8

I am still undecided on MB/CPU....

Leaning towards one of two options...

X7SPE-HF-D525-O
or
X9SCM-F-O with 35-55W i3/E3 variant

Clearly one is more capable than the other.... whereas, the other is leaner...

Still mulling it over.. :) Any thoughts the one towards the other?

P.S. For anyone interested, I think this is a decent price on a decent 2U PSU...

Yikes! I'm tempted. I have like $30 in ebay bucks too from all of those IBM ServeRAID M5014's I bought.

I have a Supermicro PWS-605P-1H in my RM31616. Got it for $140ish online and it makes very little noise.

Question-
The only way to connect hard drives is with a SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cable because of the mini-SAS backplane?

Hello fainttrace,

The units listed by this ebay seller are SATA backplanes:

As such, they require SATA connectors on the drive side. The I/O controller side would be dependent on your I/O solution (i.e. SFF-8087 or SATA).

HTH.
