I got this along with some of you here:

SuperMicro CSE-846 w/ X9DRL-iF 4U 24 HD Bay Storage Server AOC-USAS2-L8i

I am trying to get this working now and I am trying to find some cheap CPU to populate this storage device. What did some of you use? What is the best bang for the bucks now?

Thanks!

1600 is single socket only, you need the 2600 series chips v1 or v2.

I'm going to sell some E5-2620 v1 soon I think. If you're interested PM me, and I'll let you know when i swap them out. They're the cheapest E5s I believe, 6 cores each.

I think the 2603's are still a fair deal cheaper than 2620's but of course it depends on what you need them to do. For a storage server they will likely be fine (I have two storage servers using them on this MB)

Since they're 4 Core 4 Thread, yes they should be cheaper than the 6 Core 12 thread CPU ;) we're talking apples to oranges really.

8 Threads total vs 24.

E5-2620 ~300 used, i'd def go that route vs 200-250 for a 4 core 4 Thread, but that's me.

I think the only request here was cheap and works with the MB in question. If I missed a specific core/thread request my apologies.

That being said I still say that if it is a bulk storage device with no high performance requirements(again we don't know exactly what he wants to do with this beyond storage) the 2603's are worth a look. They can be found with just a bit of patience on ebay for under $170 so for almost half the price of a 2620 there is a spot for them.

As mentioned I run two servers with 2603s and they manage to push some decent sized ZFS arrays without being the limiting factor.

Perhaps @darkconz can provide more details on what he's trying to do so we can help him figure out if needs the apples or the oranges as I just want to save him as much money as possible while making sure his needs are met:)

I agree, we need to know more.

Another idea... Instead of 340$ what about $450 for a single E5-16xx *6core though* (if you can wait for cheaper deals too). 6 Core 12 Thread but MUCH higher frequency to get things done now, and be done. I'm not sure on power comparison just another idea :)

For parts or not working: An item that does not function as intended and is not fully operational. This includes items that are defective in ways that render them difficult to use, items that require service or repair, or items missing essential components. See the seller’s listing for full details

For the 2609's that is
