Its so funny how a lot of professional review sites gave Dell a higher rating than HP or Lenovo when these 2011 WS first came out. They are all like wow, dell is so neat inside with no cable mess, etc.... and never talk much about the non-oem parts.... fast forward to now.... Guess which WS most of us are after: lenovo s30 with the most compatibility with regular parts and all of its messy cable glory ....lol.... honestly, imo, i have no idea what messy cable they are talking about anyway....lol...

i finally figured out this MB i think... The problem is called: "bait and switch".....lol... use the same old MB before and just add a couple more long x16 slots without proper wiring and call it a day .....:)

cant quite seem to get the msata slot to work on the x79z.... anyone?

edit:

I got duped. We all fkin got duped. This is worse than anything i've seen...classic cheap chinese crap

There is no support for msata on this board vb10.... also, it has four sata 3.o connectors but only two of them work. The four sata 2.0 all work but it sucks to only have two sata 3.....

See here: China x79/c602 разгон

I am going to test to see if it can take 128gb ram max or not....

This is complete bs

Also does not have good sleep implementation. basically can't wake up from S3 sleep at all

if bios is set to acpi auto, windows detected S1 and S3 but won't wake up at all. if acpi auto is set to disabled, only have S1 sleep, which does work........ more BS...

There's a russian tester youtube video claiming it works with 128GB ram so i think that does work

My conclusion on this X79Z: AVOID !!! unless there is a new bios with a lot of fixes, best to just get something like a lenovo s30. Esp if you are building a workstation

The lenovo S30 has four sata 2 (five if you have an optional module)... also have two sata 3, also have esata.

it also have 8 ram slots with support for rdimms... as well as having 2 pcie x16, one pcie x4 (x16 physical size), one pcie x4, one PCI 2.3

So if you can get a lenovo s30 v2 for less than $250, you should go that way instead of getting this runing X79Z.

so i did get this runing x79z to run a 2696 v2 with 128gb ram. so at least that's the good part.

I am testing an Asus P9x79 deluxe board right now. the good thing is it does take a 2696 v2. The bad thing is i am not able to get it to use 16gb ecc ram modules. Asus site says 128gb but i think that's limited to maybe only non ecc ram support by IM ( Intelligent Memory ) memory modules, whatever that means....

I am getting a P9x79 WS board so will see if that's any better. maybe asus restricting 16gb ecc ram to WS boards?... we ll see...

I don't think those boards support RDIMM, only UDIMM

I would say that is the only place they are better.
for the X99 platform, I have great single and dual socket boards that support just about all the cpus (even ES) with great ram support and features in the form of Asus Z10PE-D16 and Asrock X99 Taichi.

I have a good dual socket X79 in Asus Z9PE-D16..... But I still haven't been able to find a do it all single socket X79 board yet... Chinese or not

When I mean do it all, it should have 8 ram slots with support of up to 128gb at least allowing for ECC non ECC. I am fine if they don't use LRdimm but udimm and rdimm should be supported.... It's like impossible to find 16gb ecc ddr3 udimm….

Also it should have S3 sleep support as well as support of oem cpu like 2696 v2.... As well as more than 2 pcie x16 slots...

The asus p9x79 seems to come closest but it's very disappointingly does not support rdimm….

Sad announcement after finally running additional test..... Lenovo S30 does NOT recognize 2696 v2.....does work with 16gb rdimm as per spec

BUT Lenovo D30 DOES work with 2696 v2.

So weird isn't it? Everything of course on the latest bios..... I don't know why lenovo didn't have the exact same cpu microcode for both s30 and d30.... both support 2697 v2 12 core cpus.... sad...;(

So far, i have not been able to find a single one socket 2011 v2 board that does everything: S3 sleep, 8 ram slots accepting 16gb rdimm, 2696 v2 oem cpu supports, and at least 3 pcie x16 slots. How hard is that? lol...

The only boards i got so far that does all the 4 are the asus z9pe-d16 and lenovo d30 dual socket boards.... anyone else wants to add anything?

in the x99 world, so much easier to find a perfect single socket board.... I have the asrock taichi x99 that does pretty much everything....

looks like the only boards that supports rdimm are the one with the c602 chipset. I think gigabyte has one in Gigabyte X79S-UP5?

All the asus p9x79 (including the WS ver) cannot use any rdimm since they all use the x79 and not the c60x chipset ;(, only udimm. I confirmed this personally

That is one of the big advantage of cheap chinese x79 boards is that they use the c602 chipset which allows for use of rdimm ram....

I am getting the gigabyte x79S -UP5-wifi soon. hopefully that will be the board that meets all the criteria....

The other one is the SM X9SRA

Since all the slots are connected x8/x8/x8/x8 should be possible..
Hello,
New member here. I just bought the x79 VB10, which the manufacture says, has 2 x PCI-e x16, 2 x PCI-e x8.
I also thought x8/x8/x8/x8 should be possible.
I tried manual PCIE configurations in the BIOS, however, only black lanes are keep working at x16.

Have you tried configuring it too?
Since I only needed 4 cards to work, x8/x8/x8/x8 would be perfect for me.

Thanks in advanced.

No one has been able to get all four of the x16 to work at the same time..... The only plus to this board compared to most of the other chinese board is the fact that 128gb ram is possible and have been confirmed by me and several other.... other than that, it's the same as the others including the fact of no S3 sleep support and also the fact of only having two x16 working even though it has four physical x16 slots.

Yeah, my setup is also with 128GB RAM.
Mine is Huanan clone/variant. They called it x79 VB10 version and labeled as Runing.

I never expected these chinese board to work in x16/x16/x16/x16 configuration. I bought that board because, somewhere on the internet, I found that x8/x8/x8/x8 configuration is tested on that four x16 slots. I am so dumb to not bookmark it and now stuck with this. I thought it would be simple.
Thanks for the reply.

very disappointingly, the gigabyte x79s-up5-wifi I got was ver 1.0 so did not work with v2 cpu. only v1.1 does.... furthermore it didn't boot when I had 16gb rdimm modules installed thus negating any expected benefit I was hoping for with the c606 chipset.....

now only the SM X9SRA left to test

I found my weapon of choice for a do it all 2011 v2 board!:

Supermicro x9sra

This is the only board to meet these criteria:

s3 sleep under win10,
8 ram slots with support for udimm, rdimm, lrdimm
support for oem cpu like 2696 v2 as well as i7 (i7 only works with udimm)
at least 2x pcie x16 working together...

it's not $120 like cheap chinese board but it has a lot more stuffs

Here's a X9SRA for probably around$170 after shipping included. shipping is about $50 but it's international 3days.... it's on yahoo.jp. you can use any of those proxy bid. i use buyee which you only need a paypal acc and you don't have to have any advance deposit. The current price on yahoo.jp for this is better than ebay even after factor in the high ship cost.

Supermicro X9SRA ATXマザーボード LGA2011 Intel C602 クーラー付 管81066-2 /【Buyee】 "Buyee" Japan Shopping Service | Buy from Yahoo! Buy from Japan!

There are a lot to like about it as i discussed. I haven't found any other 2011 v2 boards with all the above criteria beside this one...

I also own X10SRA and it's also a good cheaper 2011 v3/4 board if anyone wants that. does work with ES cpu. i tested it with QHUZ
