If the Backplane Supports ses Management Thema your hba should be able to locate the failed Drive.

So sgpio is required? And the built in Sata controllers can't probably?

I don't know what else is required to make it work and if it's possible with onboard sata controllers.

HBA vendors like Broadcom & Adaptec provide tools for management and troubleshooting, there is often a cli tool that can be used to blink the led on the front.

I got a SM SRH and was hoping that there was a way to get the to indicate a drive on my homeserver. But I guess it's not that easy.
