After selecting keyboard, it jumps back to "Where are you?" and just sits there. It also switches to wide screen so I can't get to the buttons in the lower right. I've tried all the display setting and nothing seems to affect this.

What version of Ubuntu? 16.04 installs in everything and is the latest LTS release. Use that if you can. There's a new 16.04.1 rev too.

Don't have a solve for this but will say that you're not the only one facing this problem. I had a test install of ESXi 6 on an X10DAX machine running on a E5-2690v3 and I faced a very similar issue. The screen would get cutoff and I was not able to see what I was selecting, so I couldn't finish the install. This was with the absolute latest version of Ubuntu at the time (~2 months ago).

16.04 LTS. Funny thing is, my monitor is wide screen and the Ubuntu install screen is obviously wide screen and it still cuts off.

Are you doing desktop or server install? And are you using 16.04.1?

It's a desktop install. I think it's 16.04, not .1. May I need to try .1.

I'm DL'ing 16.04.1, I'll give it a go.

I assume the VWware client is set to always scale? I know that's probably obvious. There's a whole slew of issues fixed by upping the VM guest graphics memory - not really for this issue but might be worth a try if nothing else springs to mind.

Can't find anything in the client about scaling.

16.04.1 does the same thing. Still no joy. :(

FWIW I have also been experiencing console screen issues as well with esxi 6U2 and the latest client. It affects my Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10AU but not my older non-high dpi laptop. Ubuntu 14 & 16 as well as Windows 10 guests are all affected. The issue seems to have started once I did the Win 10 anniversary update.

Apart from using the old laptop I found I can work around the issue by using the new esxi 6u2 web ui console http://esxihostip/ui

Still can't find an answer. I loaded Windows with a hitch so whatever the problem is, it's between ESXI and Ubuntu.

Also, it's doesn't hang like I first thought, just can't reach the continue/OK button. Can't tab to it either.

set the virtual graphics memory to 8MB (twice the default) and see if that fixes it

I'm downloading now to see if I can replicate it on my setup, but I seem to remember that fixing it.

EDIT - Didn't fix it for me, but didn't hit the widescreen issue until the keyboard layout screen

EDIT2 - got it, when you boot the iso, change GRUB for the Installer line to setgfxpayload=auto (originally set to keep).
