Not sure if this is the right place here for this question... but I think here are lot of professionals which can contribute.
We are using Dell Enterprise SONiC distribution in relativ small, but complex network topology with a EVPN-VXLAN overlay topology on every switch. I am just wondering who else is using this or other ON combination in a enterprise grade network? What do you think how vital the Open Networking ecostystem is today. Do you think its growing market?
Its widely known that some big tech companies use SONiC as NOS on their switches in their cloud and datacenter business. First and foremost Microsoft, but as far as I know the following companies use also SONiC in their network: ebay, team.blue, COMCAST, Alibaba, Tencent.
But which companies use it in enterprise grade networks of any size? Do you know some success or fail stories? Doesnt matter if its anonymous or not.
Would also be happy about confirmation of the big techs above and some more cloud companies as well. Heared linkin is one more, but also not sure.
I also tried to make a list of all ONOS and ON Hardware vendors, but I am not sure if its complete. Feel free to add, correct or comment.
Open Compute Project ( OCP ) based ONOS ( Open Network Operating Systems ) with ONIE ( Open Network Install Environment ) support:
SONiC
Invented by Microsoft, but Open Source since 2022 under Apache Licence
A Enterprise SONiC distribution is available from Dell.
Pica8
from PicOS
ONL (Open Network Linux)
from BigSwitch (Arista now?). Based on Debian and its licence. Its titled as a Open Network Foundation reference ONOS.
OS6 (for access-switches) and OS10 (for datacenter-switches)
from Dell
OpenSwitch
from LF Projects
DENT
from The Linux Foundation
Not sure about the state:
NVIDIA Cumulus Linux
from NVIDIA (NVIDIA aquired Cumulus last year). Not sure if there is still a true Open Network strategy behind of it this ONOS will support only NVDIA Mellanox chips soon.
Pluribus
intialy from PluribusNetwork. Arista quire Pluribus in 2022, so I am not sure whats the current state.
FBOSS
facebook Open Switch System - totaly unsure if its OCP
Junos OS
from Juniper. Its ONIE based, but I am not sure if its running on 3rd party hardware.
Switch hardware vendors:
I also collected some Hardware vendors which have ONIE switches in their lineup, also not sure if this list is complete:
ALPHA Networks Inc.
ARISTA
CISCO
Only the Nexus 8000 series? As far as I know they demonstrated a Nexus 9000 but not sure if you can buy it as product.
Dell Technologies
AFAIK the biggest range of ON switches.
Edge-Core
Wide range of ON switches.
Extreme networks
X465, X590, X690, X870, X695
Juniper
MARVELL
Nokia
NVIDIA-Mellanox
