Can someone suggest a cheap chassis for a nas?

Hello,

I have been using a Dell 2950 as a Xpenology NAS for the past 2 years, sadly, the backplane seems to be dying slowly. (So far one drive port has gone bad, replacement backplanes are ~$50-70 on ebay).

So I figure, instead of investing money in old hardware, I'll upgrade it somewhat and move the data over to a new chassis. Budget: ~$3-500 US.

I'm looking for a hopefully quiet 2U chassis that support a minimum of 6 x 3.5" HDD trays. Lastly, I'd like it to have a pci-e expansion slot for adding a single connectX-2 card.

For this basic config I was looking at: Dell FS12-TY C2100 8-Core E5520 2.26GHz 24GB RAM 12x Trays w/ SAS 6/iR | eBay

But I'd like people's opinion on this server as a reliable platform...

Optimally, I'd love to find a two node cloud server, that would allow me to run the NAS in one node, and a domain controller in the second node.

This is the other question, that I'm not even sure where to start.

Personally, I would move to an E5 V1/2 system if you can. E5 V1 is now a >5 year old platform so the 5500/5600 generation items will likely have more wear on them. At 5+ years, those systems will have hit or exceeded their expected life.

"fancy" - SuperMicro 6027R-3RF4+ w/ X9DR3-LN4F+ Rev.1.10 Dual LGA2011 E5-2600v2 Barebones 672042106264 | eBay - you can find a single E5 V1 and RAM for $100 easily.

Older/ less expensive but still with AES-NI on the 5600 series: 2U Supermicro 12 Bay 826TQ-R800 Server X8DTN+ 2x Xeon E5645 Six Core 48GB Rail | eBay

Most are going to suggest the SuperMicro 2U Sc216.
It's not even near that price barebones, let alone with any system.

edit: looks like patrick posted prior to my post / during my "post a new reply" screen ;) LOL!!

I am... very sneaky.

@spyrule - I think there are folks on here who have done that but I do not recall it being terribly easy.
