Since its impossible to find a good C6100 that isn't either a DCS model or totally overpriced, I'm trying to think of alternatives in the same pricepoint.

Supermicro Fat twins are too expensive and the DL1000 has bad reviews.

I don't HAVE to have a 4 Node cluster in a 2U space. I really just need 2 Nodes and some kind of shared storage setup
SO what I'm thinking is to get

2 x HP DL160 G6 w/ 32GB/ 2x L5520 each. For around 350 a piece.
Some kind of 1U SAN...
That gets me 2 nodes and shared storage in 3Us of space.
Not as good as the C6100 but what options do I have really.

My goal is to have ESXi / vCenter with shared storage/HA/DRS etc.. for a home lab environment.
Mostly to tinker with vSphere but also to have my home environments, file server, AD server, possibly some others.

Any suggestions to this ?

Just noticed they don't seem to come with risers for the expansion slot. If you want to put an add-in card, that's about $18/each as well.

RSC-R1U-E16R

Supermicro Twin Twins are good systems.

People are selling dual L5520 servers with 500GB of storage for like $120/ month. I can see why there are not many left.

Yeah I've been looking over FatTwin for a while too, Slightly more initial investment. But if we can slide in 2011 board nodes into this thing when they come down in price. Thats a winner right there.

Any one know a good supply house for parts? Or just ebay?

Ebay - but I'm totally with you. If you can use the E5 boards in them it would be a complete win.

Watch Craigslist for C6100s, I picked up a XS23-TY3 3.5" Chassis with 4 nodes, 8x L5520s, 24GB of RAM per node and 4 drive trays for $400 last night. So deals are out there, just harder to find.

Anyone that currently uses the Supermicro 6026TT-HTRF. Can you reach out to me? I want to inquire about your setup. I'm wondering if, like the c6100, you can tie 6 HDDs to one Node. To build a storage node.

Me too! I would get a few right now if they were affordable.
I ended up picking up a C6100 off a member of this forum.
It should arrive tomorrow.

Super pumped!

And yes. I will definitely grab a 6220 when start to show up on the market.

This time I will snatch one up rather than waiting and then watching the price inflate by double!

Lucky guy! I'm still looking for a c6100 in the ~$700 range. I'd love a 6220 but they're not avail yet.. Anyone have a chart (or estimate i guess) when Dell servers will go off lease?

dcbarans, it depends on the leasing agreement with the end using customer. However I would expect by middle of next year that the C6220s would start showing up in limited quantities and end of 2015 in full force. I say that, however it is very likely that LGA2011 will see a longer live span in service than LGA1366 saw.
