Is there any way to troubleshoot the serial port on these Brocade switches? I have a ICX 7250 24p that seems (from the lights and fan patterns) to be booting up but I'm not getting anything over the serial connection. I've tried multiple mini-usb to serial cables, different PCs, etc. I understand that it's not a regular USB port but a serial port in disguise.

This switch is new to me so it might just be broken but I'd like to test that before I seek a refund. Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to ensure your cable is working on another device. If all you have is your 7250 then you need to dive deeper.

A few, including myself, have posted here they've created their own cable using a keystone and sacrificial mini-USB cable. The first time I did it my cable had a bad conductor. Use a multimeter and insure there is proper continuity between one end to the other.

See my post where I asked for help where I included the pinout. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/vdx-6740t-mini-usb-console-trouble.32179. The VDX uses the same pinout as the ICX.

Thank you for the suggestion and link. I've tried several versions of that with keystones and wiring serial-usb cables directly together. I also bought a premade mini-usb to serial cable from Amazon that someone in the review had used with a Brocade switch. Nothing seems to work. It's possible I've got the wiring wrong but, at this point, it seems more likely that the serial port isn't working.

Has anyone come across that kind of situation? An apparently working switch with a broken serial port?

EDIT: I have a second Brocade switch but not one with a mini-usb (6610)

The best you can do are:

1. Ensure your serial port is working.
2. If you have jumper wires connect your premade mini-USB to an RJ45 plug and try it on your 6610.

If someone connected the serial port to an actual USB port I’ve read the will fry the port. How are you with surface mount soldering? You could likely change the serial IC or possibly there is a sacrificial resistor that could simply be replace. Can you post a photo of the ICs near the serial port?

yes, I actually have an icx6610 doing exactly this in NYC (terminating a GRE tunnel from a ddos provider). it's all done in hardware at line rate. note than enabling gre tunnels disables a couple counter features like ipv6 ACLs. full details starting on page 103 of fastiron-08030mb-l3guide.pdf
Good day fohdeesha

Just wanted to know if this ICX 6610 is capable of using GRE Tunnel Key to differentiate the Multiple GRE Tunnels with the same Source and Destination similar to the below Cisco configuration?
If yes, how will be the equivalent ICX6610 configuration look like?

Ok, i need some help troubleshooting here. I got my new 6450-24P, it works great, i setup like in @fohdeesha 's guide. I set up the ip address in my network (currently flat) with no vlans. I connected a fiber between 1/2/3 on the 6450 and 1/3/5 on the 6610. I had a link at first, then it went dark, and currently it will only link when i reboot the switch then goes down after a few seconds. logs show link goes up and down a bunch of times, then it settles on blocking. Regular copper from the 6610 to the 6450 works fine and stays up. Spanning tree is not turned on. If i pull the copper and try to enable and disable the sfp link, i get nothing. I have the console cable hooked up to the 6450, nothing looks out of the ordinary to me. From what i read, the 6450 should act like any dumb switch when coming right from fohdeesha's guide. Meaning, i should be able to get a link from one switch to the other.

I have been scouring the net looking for some sort of procedure to setup an uplink on this, is 'stacking' what i have to do? I guess since you can uplink to other brand switches i figured you could with a brocade in non-stacked mode.

Any clues where i should be looking? What logs should i upload for help troubleshooting?

this should work fine assuming it's the only link between the two and you haven't created a loop, have you gone through the licensing and 10g enable commands on both switches?

Yes I have. Right to the letter.

The port appears to be flapping. I moved the transceiver to another sfp port, same thing happened. I ordered some brocade sfp units to be able to get feedback on those. The ones i'm using are all the same, they are working fine in the 6610 to my servers.

Meanwhile, i'll keep debugging.

I have replaced fans in my 6450-48p with arctic s4028-15k

Temps are +- the same, loudness is +- the same(but new ones have better soundprofile, they do not whistle that much).

Tldr; Dont buy them if you want to have quiet switch :D

littlebeef(config-if-e10000-1/2/1)#

can you just paste the output of these regular commands:

show int eth 1/2/1
show media e 1/2/1
show log

then same on the 6610 for its 10g port. and paste 6610 config

I just got a 7250 and had a heck of a time getting connected, but I finally did. Is your serial driver up to date? Any way to check it on something else?

I ended up having another issue. I didn’t have a serial cable, but I did have an UART FTDI USB dev board for programming ESP boards. I hooked that up to a mini USB cable I cut up. You have to get the pins right, but I was getting gibberish in SSH instead of readable text. This probably won’t help you, but I had to flash the FTDI board with a change of settings to invert the Tx and Rx signals. I did that and it went from gibberish to working.

One benefit to using the UART board is that it has lights on it that come on with Tx and Rx. So when I hit a key like b to boot I can verify the board is sending it. And when the switch communicates back, I see Rx light up and know I’m at least on the right path.

I had no idea a special cable was needed until I sat down to start messing with it. But I wasn’t waiting a few days for a cable to show up. It was fun to learn.

Now I’m all set up with forehead’s guides, which are absolutely fantastic. But I have no idea what I should do with a managed switch, so I need to find some good resources on that. If anyone has a recommended config reference for homelab stuff I’d love to see what others are doing.

Publicly shaming myself here but just an FYI to remember to write to memory/"Save to Flash" after making changes! Spent a good 90 minutes troubleshooting some AP's that were cycling after a power outage before remembering that I had to adjust POE settings on the 6610 to allocate power by class instead of the default config which was on my switch that wasn't providing enough power. Embarrasing.

Also reminder to invest in a UPS to also avoid the above for those short outages...

Many thanks fohdeesha for the great resource here!!

lol. I’m so sorry. I’m down to one Apple device (iPad) and it’s by far the worst offender with bizarre autocorrect. Apologies If I offended you. Definitely not a good look to show up here out of the blue and call the person helping everyone ‘forehead’. I’ll take my lashings and sit in the corner for as long as necessary.
My wife and I can't complain enough about Apples newest AI driven autocarrot!
