Well here goes my first post.
Bought 8
8 arrived in so-so packaging
8 DOA

Seperate systems, changed out cables etc blah blah

Lovin this guys product. gonna get my money back
how are you testing the HDDs? what hardware and what program?

i'm asking because at one point I thought I had a bunch (8 in a row) of DOA drives too, but it turned my onboard SAS controller by Intel C606 has a lame implementation of SAS protocol and wasn't compatible. when i used an LSI HBA controller, they all worked great.

sounds more like compatible issues, try what BLinux suggested and see if you are able to get them working.

I am using these Mini SAS SFF-8643 to (4)29pin SFF-8482 connectors + SAS 15pin Power Cable 0.5M 6165437054430 | eBay to connect the HDD’s to the onboard LSI 3008 (flashed to IT mode) on my X11SPH-NCTF motherboard.

They’re not even spinning up and the controller reports 0 devices
do you have 3.3V on the pin3 SAS power connector?

12Gbps SAS defines that pin for power down control (basically, forced power reset), where as older implementations had 3.3V power on it. if that pin is supplying 3.3V, it forces the HDD not to spin up.

Here I am with two multimeters with flat batteries. Great. So you’re saying I might need new cables?

let's get creative... do you have anything to test for 3.3V? like an LED or something? if so, identify the 3.3v and ground pin and touch the pins with the LED leads and see if it lights up.

as for a fix... just put some thin insulating tape over the 3.3v pin. you won't be able to use the power-reset feature, but you'll be able to use the hard drives. (provided this is the issue and you didn't really get 8 DOA drives)

That's got me wondering, before I buy like 9000 of these, anyone confirmed they work in MD1000 enclosures?

(use plenty of 4tb+ SAS drives in them no problem, but wondering if it potentially has the same power/reset control issue with these much newer drives)

no idea... i just sold my MD1000 to a member here...

i've had no problems with these HDDs (with the power reset) on supermicro SAS2, A, and TQ backplanes.

Thanks to BLinux and a bit of electrical tape, I've got one drive spinning up and detected. 7 to go.

Goes with my can do ghetto approach. IMG_0102.JPG

I'll let you know by tomorrow if they work in an md1000

update: recognized just fine in an md1000 connected to an LSI 9200-8e. However...first one started throwing errors quickly during badblocks

Great call on the 3.3v. I recall people were running into that with the WD 8TB drive shucking bonanza.

I've finally tested my drives pretty thoroughly on my live system (i think). I'm still a bit unsure, so I made a separate thread not to fill this one (it's a long one).

If anyone is interested and want to give me some input (I hope you are), you can jump over to the thread here. :)

after overcoming my initial issue that a sliver of tape solved, I ran bad blocks and smartctl on all 8 hard drives with no errors. Awesome

he bumped the price to 65 when I tried to order 16.... Told him I already payed full price on 4, and that was 10 more than the going >10 discount... we shall see how he replies.
