Bringing this dead post back to life again in 2024, I have to wonder - who is cloning VMs so much that it because a major decision point on whether to run one hypervisor or the other.

BSD is faster at the kernel level over linux on the EXACT SAME HARDWARE. This is one of the reasons why BSD is used on production devices Firewalls, Playstations, blah blah blah your comparing apples and oranges.

Nah, the stuff you listed has to to with the licenses. The bsd license has no copyleft, gnu gpl has very strict copyleft requirements.
"Bsd" folks are optimistic that uses will share their derived code with the community, "gpl" folks are pessimistic and force you to share the derived code

It’s really fun with vendors forgot that linux is gpl and then you get to bother them for their source.
