Hey guys, i'm thinking about getting a SX6018 to replace an IS5022, i need more that 8 ports as this IB switch is now filled and would love to be able to also use ethernet with it to bridge to my regular network.
Currently i have mainly Connectx-2 in IB mode, they are not capable of more than 10gbe, but run fine in IB QDR.
I need to replace those with Connectx-3 of course, for the servers that can profit from it (so not the PCIe 2.0 limited westmere ones).

I found cheap options for the card on Ebay, and a very cheap for the switch, but this thread has been mainly about SX6012...

Are the instructions for the 6012 also applicable for the 6018? I would think "not" as the firmware would not match am i right?
Where could i find a source distro file compatible with SX6018?

I have not seen many people here with 6018, but i couldn't find any EMC 6012 on ebay unfortunately.

I have 2 6018's that converted just fine. The OS image containes all 96+ firmwares. You just cut one out for the 6018s

The modules I extracted were from the version in the guide. A much older version of the OS image. This one doesn't even list the 18 port 40gig model I used as my flash image. As far as the dirt cheap 60x5 units... I thought they didn't even have a serial port to flash the bios as they were managed remotely.

I am going to pick up one of those EMC MSX6005 to play with. My original plan was to temporarily swap the management board from my MSX6012 for flashing. But that 6012 is my only QSFP switch and I do not really want to take it apart for a side project like that. So I started looking into other options and decided to try I2C flashing route. My understanding is that the Mellanox MTUSB-1 adapter required for the procedure is just repackaged Diolan DLN-1 USB-to-I2C adapter. But does anyone know the purpose of that small shrink-wrapped circuit board?

It's not exactly "extra $20". I can get MSX6005 for like $50 locally. I mean I already negotiated the price down with the seller - I just need to go and pick it up. Also this project is mostly about learning new things.

ah okay.. I was basing off ebay 6005's vs 6012's thats a good price.. I do recommend the 6018's if you want a quieter unit though.. sitting next to my 6012 for any length of time was painful. :)

Ok. I picked the switch up and I got my first piece of bad news - while SX6012 and SX6005 share the main PCB design the unmanaged switch version does not have the mezzanine (management) board connector, ethernet PHY, UART TTL converter and some smaller components populated. So my management board swapping plan went out of the window. I should have guessed that.

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying and making a conversion of an emc 6018. Reading through the doc, it seems i need a rj45 to serial cable. Do you know if this cable has some special pinout? Already have a rj45 to usb from an old eaton ups at home. So, do you think it will work or do i have to buy something different? What kind of cable did you use?

It seems like it should be possible to convert those dirt cheap EMC SX60x5 units into unmanaged 40/56GbE L2 switches just by flashing proper config for the SX ASIC firmware.

Whats the idle (or closest to it) power consumption between the two? I'm still looking at buying one and I was going to get the 12port, but if the 18 port is quieter AND uses less power (it seems to according to the PDFs) that sounds like a win-win to me. It's less about the power bill than it is about UPS runtime :D

I'll tell you when I get my 6018, once I've converted it my 6012 is going up for sale :)

Should be here sometime next week.

Looking forward to hearing about the comparison, I'm assuming that per-port occupancy would scale fairly closely (unless the power supplies in one are drastically better?)
