One of the Seagate archive drives I just got makes a very infrequent, "squeak" or tiny "pip" sound. I may just send it back since I just got it and try another, likely from Amazon direct this time. Seatools reports no issues though.

In a 2 year period 5 of 8 failed on me. 1 was DoA. In stark contrast of the 16 Toshiba DT01ACA300/Hitachi Deskstar 7k3000 from which none failed (knock on wood).
I use the Toshis, too.

One out of 7 had minimal read errors at some point in a few years so I moved it to a secondary array. But after a full overwrite it never made a muck again over there.
