I want to ugrade my fileserver (currently using the Adaptec 6805 raid controller with 6x 6tb in raid 6 + 2 hot spare drives) in the next months and I came across hardware raid caching technologies like Adaptecs MaxCache and LSIs CacheCade while researching.

Now I'm wondering what ssds would be the best to improve the overall performance when using cachecade or maxcache: the zeusram ssd (8gb capacity, up to 51k 4k write iops, sas-2) or newer 12gb/s sas ssds (200-800 gb, up to 72k 4k write iops).

Are you planning to continue using a hardware RAID controller's write cache?

If so, you will likely want to optimize on SSD capacity for read caching.

Yes, if I understand it correctly cachecade and maxcache use the onboard ram as tier 1 cache and the ssds as tier 2 cache for reading/writing.
