I have finally got Nextcloud up and running at home, running on a Proxmox server and utilising Docker compose. This sits behind my home lab reverse proxy server (Nginx Proxy Manager) along with some other apps on other servers. The infra side of things works well.

I am finding Nextcloud a bit meh, but some of this could be because I am not yet attuned to the 'Nextcloud way'.

I am looking for alternatives (a single solution or collection of dockerised apps) to satisfy the following and hope the folks here may be able to suggest some alternatives.

Self Hosted functionality I am looking for
  • Pictures - store, share and browse : Like Memories on Nextcloud very much.
  • Documents - store, share, browse and edit (PC): Require MS Office like editing ability from PC but not so much from mobile.
  • Music - Ability to store, share and play: Nextclouds 'Music' app is ok but viewing Albums list by artist so 'Best of ...' albums have tracks all over the place.
  • Video calls: With the demise of Skype, finding a decent free service that allows 2-3h video calls with family has eluded me so far. Nextclouds self hosted webcam service was a big draw.
  • Webmail: Private webmail to move away from Outlook. Not keen on my providers webmail. Want to pull mail from various providers ( Gmail / Outlook.com / my own domains ). A calendar (person and group / family) would be good for birthdays / national holidays etc.
  • Videos - Ability to store, share and play: Low priority but nice to have.

Would love to hear of any other functionality others have found really useful in a home / family environment. My place is too small to bother with home automation. For me it would be a fair amount of effort for little actual gain.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Issues with Nextcloud (possibly a fair amount of human error here) prompting me to look for some other solution(s).

  • Documents: You seem to have to open the file browser, go to a save location, create a new file and then you can use the 'Office' editor to edit it. This feels like a really clunky workflow to me. I prefer being able to fire up the editor from a menu, do stuff and then save, or not, when I have finished.
  • The apps menu bar: The apps menu bar at the top only seems to hold some of the apps, I have no idea how to find the others. It also seems you cannot customise the app order easily (possibly you need to edit text files in the background).
  • App integration: Some apps do not appear on the menu bar (see above). I installed SnappyMail and have no idea where to access it. This is not the only app to do this. I have a number of apps 'Enabled' but I have no idea how to access them.
  • Whiteboard: Again, seems to have to be started from the file app.
Any advice on these to bring things back round to Nextcloud also very welcome ( short of RTFM... I am looking for an intuitive solution not one I need certifications for ).

I think I would say you are better off using several separate software packages, than looking for one that will do everything. I was asking this same question to Claude.AI today and it turned me on to oCIS (owncloud infinite scale). It is owncloud, re-engineered in Go, and re-architected. It dosn't need a separate database, it doesn't need redis, it is one container that does all of its functions, and it has no OCC command, no cron jobs to mess with, and it is amazingly fast. There are two things to be aware of though: First it is not a jack of all trades like Nextcloud. Feature and function-wise it is almost a perfect match for Synology Drive. There are almost no colaboration features. Second, it seems like there's some politics going on and bunch of folks forked oCIS earlier this year and started OpenCloud. I just started playing with Opencloud today, and I am super impressed. It uses so much less resource than Nextcloud, and it is fast. It does document colaboration and calendars as well, where oCIS does not. Here is what I would use if I wanted to recreate Nextcloud
  • Pictures - Immich
  • Documents - OpenCloud has collaboration with Collabora and search with Tika
  • Music - Lidarr with either Kodi or Jellyfin
  • Video calls - Zoom free plan or Apache OpenMeetings
  • Webmail - Thunderbird or Zimbra
  • Videos - Radarr with either Kodi or Jellyfin
