I have 8x 4TB hitachi's that I need to attach for mass storage (blu-ray). I am looking to use either windows server 2012 or flexraid (I used it before but have migrated). What would be the best controller to use?

So far I've just found these as basic HBA's as I don't I gain anything from going to a IBM 5015 or RAID.

I'm looking more at the supermicro as it seems to be a bit cheaper. Anyone have any advice on what I should do?

Thanks!

Double check compatibility with >2TB drives on that SuperMicro. The one you linked is the AOC-SASLP-MV8. This is their older card. Last time I looked at it is was limited to 2TB drives or less, and only connects at SATA-II speeds. The one that works with larger drives is the AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 (notice the "2" in the name). Its a bit more expensive (but not much). Couldn't find it on newegg, but a comparable Amazon listing is here. Also, both of those cards are based on the Marvell SAS chipset - look up that card or Marvell SAS on [H]ardforum - you'll see that the drivers for it have a long as sordid history of problems with Linux compatibility & stability (that that might have been sorted out with the later drivers).

Why not an IBM M1015 (not 5015)? You can usually find them <$100 (used to be less than $85, but prices seem to have gone up). Flash it to LSI 9211-IT firmware and you have a fast, reliable non-raid HBA that is compatible with almost every major OS, is stable, plays well with SAS expanders (for future growth), etc. It is LSI-2008 based as is much faster and probably more stable than that Marvell based card.

OTOH, I think you'll probably fail anyway. Why not just give up now and send those drives over to me. PM for the shipping instructions :)

Don't send them to PL send them to me

M1015 as PL said best bang for buck, keep an eye on Ebay or here, we usually keep an eye on them looking for bargains.
