I have a SuperMicro X9SCL+-F with an Intel I3-1230 v2 CPU and I put in some Kingston memory KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G. When I try booting the machine, I get four beeps in a row and nothing. :(

I checked Kingston’s website to make sure I got the right type and it seems to be the right kind, I just wanted to double check to make sure I didn’t do anything stupid and get the wrong type before I RMA the memory.

I tried one memory stick per slot and I got the same thing. I just find it odd that BOTH sticks seem bad. I figure at least one would work.

Are you using one stick that works in both slots or only one of the two slots work?

I have a feeling that the LGA1155 Mobo's can't take 16GB DIMMs

Check memory comparability for the Mobo at SM, and I'll doubt you'll see any 16GB DIMMs

Yes using the decoder ring from having bought too much Kingston memory: KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G

K2 = Kit of 2
16G = 16GB total

So 16GB/ 2= 2x 8GB 1333GB CL9 DIMMs in that kit.

Just for an update in case someone runs across this. I called SuperMicro tech support and asked them what they thought. They insisted that it was a memory issue because I got four beeps when I boot the MB with no memory. I didn’t believe them so I started researching more. Apparently the X9SCL+-F motherboard ships with BIOS version 1.1 and you need BIOS version 2.0 to boot the E3-1230 v2 CPU. A v2 CPU doesn't work out of the box with the motherboard!

One thing about my area is that they only stock low end stuff. I was able to find a place local that had an Intel Pentium G620 CPU in stock. I bought that and put that in the motherboard. It booted right away, so I flashed it to BIOS v2.0. Then put in my E3-120 v2 CPU back in and it worked like a charm.

My biggest complaint is that SuperMicro insisted it was my memory that was a problem. It would have been a lot easier if they didn’t insist that memory was the problem (I even asked if the v2 CPU could cause the issue). The MB beeps much different when there’s no memory in it. :)

I now have a useless G620 CPU though. :(

Good update. Hope V2 starts shipping soon. It has been known since launch that you need the Supermicro V2 BIOS for the V2 CPU but maybe there are still channels stocking older boards. Hopefully the older stock runs out soon.

I have the X9SCL-F and it shipped with v1.1 BIOS. You have to have a Sandy Bridge processor to be able to use it to upgrade to v2 BIOS. If you don't have one, any old Sandy Bridge Celeron will work, the first processor I used with it was a single-core G440. Grab one off eBay for $20 and you're good to go.

Whoops, sorry to hijack massively old thread. Hope info is helpful to someone.
