EDIT (apr 8 2019)- this same seller has more in stock (look like ~39), i just bought 8x more over weekend (he accepted 60$ ea direct pp, or said he would take 65 or 70$ if i bought though ebay. i did direct pp) , will update when they arrive. but the other 24x i bought about a month ago have been running perfect, and the seller told me these are from the same source (FWIW).

IMO very good deal on these great drives (i love ALL hgst drives!), last time STH ppl bought about 120+ of them in ~ 24-36 hours!

EDIT: sold out, but see this info and specs at bottom of this page. almost same drive for same price , same seller:
HP HGST HSSC0480S5xnNMRI HUSMR1050ASS204 480GB 0B30150 SAS 2.5" SSD HDD | eBay

/EDIT

i think this is an excellent deal, ive already bought 12x of them and prob will buy another 8x (they all came in fine, all with 0-1% WE used up, most 0%). are Read instenive, but do have nice write endurance (2.4 PB on the 500gb drives). (these are actually 500g HGST drives, but HP under provs. them to 480g it appears)
(SAS disks ofcourse, not sata)

seller has qty ~100x.
(a little ebay trick, keep trying numbers on that QTY field, and you can figure out sellers quantity)

He took a best offer of 75$ on 4x
and then a week later took 60$ on 8x (or maybe 5 or 6x? i forget)

HP HGST HSCP0480S5xnNMRI HUSMR1650ASS204 480GB 0B32264 SAS 2.5" SSD HDD | eBay

(he also has the step lower 500g HGST drive in another listing at 120$, so maybe he will let those go for even less if you dont need to performance, but i have only bought these above)

they do have HP FW, but i have not seen any probs with this (have tested them hard too for about a month), no probs getting full sas smart data, nor any issues with LSI HBAs or lsi RAID card (nor SM sas2 expander BPs) , nor zfs on freenas via hba.

lmk any ? or if want smart data post.

(lol, he started at 15 sold, now its 27 sold , in one hr!, 18hr later, 71 sold ..correction 79 sold now). patrick needs to start charging for this lol (maybe tell ppl how we can add ur ebay affilate link into our good deal posts)

You must mean 2.4PB, not 2.4TB... The latter would be pretty terrible. :)

Edited: Confirmed... 2.4PB

Just made an offer of 6 for $55 each and got countered for $60. I instantly accepted. I've had the 100gb and 200gb versions of these and they've been really solid. (and tip to you all that are living in the EU, I'm using MyUS to forward the packages and it works just great).

annnndddd they are sold out. wow STH is no joke, in less than 24 hours nearly 100 drives sold ($6-8k in product).

did anyone even at quantity, get them for less than $60 a drive?

for those that missed out, the seller still has 22x of this excellent HGST ssd ( listed at $120 verse $150 for the others, so I can’t comment directly but I’m guessing he will take good , low offers)

HP HGST HSSC0480S5xnNMRI HUSMR1050ASS204 480GB 0B30150 SAS 2.5" SSD HDD | eBay

while these are also 500gb/480gb drives, the spec’d R/W performance is about half of the ones in OP, but I’m pretty sure they’re write endurance is a higher though. Check the stats from hgst to be sure

HUSMR1050ASS204

EDIT: specs on above:
https://documents.westerndigital.co...sas-series/data-sheet-ultrastar-ssd1000mr.pdf
I just looked them up, actually the performance isn’t as nearly as bad as I thought on those $120 above, they are actually r/w 145 K / 20 K (vs 130k/30k on OP) , but the write endurance is a tad lower than OP

(54 sold as of now)

I saw your post and offered $60 for six and got accepted. Already received shipping notice. I should get mines in a day since I am close to the seller. Thanks OP!

Oh, anyone know if these are 512 or 4k sector drives? I plan to use these as ZFS raidz10 mirrored vdevs and set the ashift = 9 or 12 properly.

The datasheet above claims the drives can be 512, 520, 528, or 4k sector size. Likely a firmware setting. Mine won't be here until Monday so I can't check actual drives.

Ive read quite a bit on this on the freenas forums, and ofcouse only applying to Freenas (shoudl be same for most ZFS though) - and if your only goal is ashift=12 , many of the fourms were saying that even on 512b drives, FN sets them to ashift=12. i know many/most of my HDDs do NOT support 4k native , and when i run the command, it shows just about every drive ashift=12 (which is 4k) , and this is with no tweaks or changes on my end (FN 11.2 and FN 11.1). (maybe my drives are doing 4k emulated? they are almost all 3 or 4tb HGST sas HDDs, im refering to, mostly 7k400 models)

i cant cite the threads right now, but i think it may not matter as much as you think

also while the drives in my first post are sold out, here is smart data from one (of those sold out ones, not the ones seller still has in stock) - (grantd this doesnt necessarily tell you if the drive/FW can be set to 4kn or not):

(maybe the physical block size has something to do with it and ashift? someone who knows more about HDDs / SANs than me should chime in)

(FYI prob 90% of the writes on this drive smart data below, are from me stress testing it over the past month or so)

BTW, in reguards to my earlier post saying patrick should tell us how to add his ebay affilate code into these ebay good deals links we all post - i looked into this a bit more, he is already running some forum plugin or code that does this automatically. u can see some affiliate code is auto added to any/all ebay links posted anywhere on the forum (good for him, and nice move!), just a VERY rough calc, id *guess* his affiliate acct pulled in ~250-400$ from this post/everyones' buys on this great deal (estimating ~5-7k$ in sales for ebay seller). good for STH!

Received my six drives today. They're packaged in USPS wrap and box. Drive stats are almost identical to james23.

I remember ashift should match "Physical block size: 4096 bytes" and setting it to 2^12 (is 4096) is correct.

so in all i bought 24x of these, 8x then 8x then 8x (over about 6 weeks). All are awesome (all are 0-1% used writeE , 0 sas errors).

however 2x (of the last batch i got) i noticed were acting weird. I was trying to run some benchmarks on an extra adaptec 71685 card i have (just to see that cards speeds), but 2x of the 16x i had attached were showing up (in maxview on windows) with a yellow ! and were unusable (maxview info on the drives show unknown sector size).
(jump to bottom for the answer/fix)

Window also would not see the drives at all. so i moved those 2x, along with some others over to a ubuntu 18 live usb boot machine (with a LSI HBA) , and all showed up in the gui disks app, but the same 2x showed up as un-usuable (or something simlar, also fdisk would not list them). smartCTL -a showed their data but showed sector size as 520b. same with sg_info (or sginfo).

so it was clear i needed to chnage the sector size to 512b. ubuntu 18 live, comes preinstalled with the latest sg3-utils pkg (a tool set for dealing with SCSI or SAS devices).

in google searches (which led me to some posts here on STH ofcourse!) ppl were using this command to change HDDs and SSDs to 512b (often from 520b):

sg_format -v --format --size=512 /dev/daXX (or /dev/sdXX)
or if that gave errors then:
sg_format -v --format --size=512 --six -v /dev/daXX (or /dev/sdXX)

however ubuntu 18 live kept giving me some error on sg_format like:
sg_format: symbol lookup error: sg_format: undefined symbol: sg_memalign

(however this is an issue specific to ubuntu 18 live, or the latest sg3-utils, as even when i tried the 1st command on full accessable 512b disks, it gave that same error.. fyi i was using /dev/sg5 ect on ubuntu18).

i then figured let me try them on my FreeNas 11.2 machine (also w LSI HBA), as i know FN is good with weird disks and has a full suite of utils, stock. first i just tried using the FN gui to wipe the disk, but it ofcouse gave me this error (related to 520b sector and not being 512b):
Disk wipe job failed: Command '('gpart', 'create', '-s', 'gpt', '/dev/da18')' returned non-zero exit status 1.]
or
Disk wipe job failed: Command '('dd', 'if=/dev/zero', 'of=/dev/da18', 'bs=1m', 'count=32')' returned non-zero exit status

FN reported the same 520b with smartctl -a and sginfo, but in FN this command did work! (and now the 2x disks are full accessible/working on all platforms!)
sg_format -v --format --size=512 --six -v /dev/daXX

(note this command on FN failed: sg_format -v --format --size=512 /dev/daXX )

I was going to try ubuntu 16 live, b4 trying on my FN box (which i think would have worked too btw).

FWIW, one of these 2x 520b disks from this seller did have 3% WE used up, the other had 0%

SGformat command working, and then below that:
before and after smartctl / sginfo data:

this same seller has more in stock (look like ~39), i just bought 8x more over weekend (he accepted 60$ ea direct pp, or said he would take 65 or 70$ if i bought though ebay. i did direct pp) , will update when they arrive. but the other 24x i bought about a month ago have been running 24/7 perfect (SM, with freenas), and the seller told me these are from the same source (FWIW).

IMO still a very good deal on these great drives (i love ALL hgst drives!), last time STH ppl bought about 120+ of them from seller in ~ 24-36 hours!

(dang, had to reupload that img asap- forum here does not strip exif data from jpg uploads. which is common on many forums btw. this is a GREAT windows tool for quickly and easily stripping exif/gps data wo touching the image itself , from photos b4 you use them (web page link): JPEG & PNG Stripper - www.SteelBytes.com )

I have to admit, I've been a big puss when it comes to enterprise SSDs and arrays. Should I just suck it up and buy 25 of them and load up a D3700?

I wish I my "Financial Authorities" (wife) would approve that kind of purchase ;) Not mentioning: literally killing the household's budget by that kind of purchase and paying customs duties :)

why shy on ent ssds?? (and YES you should put 25x in a SAN/NAS). but im curious why shy/puss? onlything i can think of is that you rather nvme, or are hdd guy?

btw, yet another STH record in that 37x drives sold in about 24 hours... i think that total now is around STH buying 150x + of these drives in the equivlent of about 36h . Im glad to know that PK is getting a commish on these ebay sales. if anyone in this industry diserves it, its him (and this site).

crazy thing is this seller had them on ebay with 0 sales for months! (granted he had them at 120 or 140$ (i forget), all the while he was taking offers from me at ~70$, but still they are a deal at 100-130$ ea even)

fwiw, if anyone REALLY wants to WHIP it out, this same seller looks to have 18x of these 15.4 TB sas ssd monisters from HGST ($3500 no obo);

Ha. Yes, an (ent) HDD guy, but not by choice. I never had the budget before to play around with anything else. Got a new position/budget and more importantly, I discovered this wonderful "used" market!
Speaking of which, unfortunately I missed the d3700 last night, so I'll wait for now.

got mine today.
One of them has 3xx tb reading and only 7 tb writing, comparing others which got 60-90tb writing and similar reading.
